New Alternatives for Children, Inc. (NAC) is an award-winning not-for-profit agency in Midtown Manhattan dedicated to serving children and families with medical complexities, chronic illnesses, and disabilities throughout the five boroughs. NAC's mental health department is comprised of a psychiatrist, 4 psychiatric nurse practitioners, 4 full-time psychologists, 2 psychology post-docs and several psychotherapists from different disciplines: social work, mental health counseling, creative arts. The program acts as a placement site for a variety of trainees across disciplines, including psychiatric nurse practitioner student interns. The department is also accredited by the American Psychology Association. NAC offers Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners the tools needed to feel successful in treating a wide variety of patients, while maintaining and valuing a manageable workload that allows time for administrative work, supervision, interdisciplinary/collaborative teamwork, and continuing education, all of which contribute to optimal patient care and outcomes. Psychiatric evaluations are scheduled in 90-minute increments (maximum 1 new evaluation per day) and medication management appointments are scheduled in 30-minute increments. We offer close collaboration with the psychiatrist and other nurse practitioners, including weekly individual and biweekly group supervision.
