The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) delivers comprehensive, evidence-based behavioral health services within a collaborative, team-based model. This role is responsible for assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients with mental health concerns who are being seen in a clinical environment. The PMHNP works closely with primary care providers, therapists, leadership, and care teams to support whole-person health, reduce stigma, and improve access to mental health services within the medical home. Providers will have to float between sites to cover for other providers when appropriate.

Requirements

  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) with a specialization in psychiatric-mental health.
  • Certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC).
  • Current and unrestricted Indiana RN and APRN licenses.
  • Valid Indiana CSR and DEA registration with ability to prescribe psychiatric medications.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and time-management skills required.
  • Proficiency in using electronic medical records, especially in a shared care model.
  • Competency with Microsoft Office tools (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint).

  • Experience in primary care, integrated care, and school-based settings preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting comprehensive mental health evaluations including history, symptom review, and mental status examinations.
  • Diagnosing mental health conditions using DSM-5 criteria and developing integrated, patient-centered treatment plans.
  • Initiating and managing psychopharmacologic treatment, monitoring therapeutic effectiveness and side effects.
  • Collaborating daily with school-based team members, primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, behavioral health consultants, and other team members to ensure coordinated care.
  • Providing brief therapeutic interventions (e.g., motivational interviewing, solution-focused therapy) and psychoeducation as appropriate within scope.
  • Supporting same-day access and warm handoffs from primary care providers and school providers for timely mental health consultation.
  • Educating patients and families on mental health conditions, treatment options, and self-care strategies within a culturally responsive framework.
  • Participating in team huddles, case reviews, and shared care planning to support integrated workflows and population health initiatives.
  • Documenting care in the shared electronic health record in alignment with organizational and regulatory standards.
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of wellness and prevention programs addressing behavioral health in primary care.
  • Engaging in quality improvement projects and data collection related to access, outcomes, and patient satisfaction.
  • Maintaining current knowledge of evidence-based psychiatric practices, integrated care models, and state and federal healthcare regulations.
