About The Position

Mental Health Cooperative, Inc. (MHC) is seeking psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner interns to assist in providing clinical mental health services to clients of all ages. This internship offers the opportunity to apply academic knowledge to develop clinical skills using evidence-based practice. Under the supervision of a preceptor, interns will perform direct patient care, including diagnosing psychiatric illness, recommending psychotropic medication, and providing general counseling and health instruction to clients and their families. Interns are also responsible for timely clinical documentation and participating in the client’s treatment team. MHC, founded in 1993, serves individuals with severe and persistent mental illness and children/adolescents with severe emotional disorders, primarily those who are uninsured or have TennCare, across Middle and East Tennessee.

Requirements

  • PMHNP interns must be master’s level students in an accredited advanced practice nursing program
  • This internship requires a minimum of one semester and maximum of three semester commitment

Responsibilities

  • Assist in providing clinical mental health services to clients of all ages
  • Apply the knowledge learned in school to develop clinical skills using evidence-based practice
  • Perform direct patient care including diagnosing psychiatric illness
  • Recommend psychotropic medication when appropriate and in accordance with standardized procedures
  • Provide general counseling, guidance and health instruction to clients and family members
  • Complete clinical documentation in a timely manner that is consistent with agency standards
  • Play a role in the client’s treatment team with other departments throughout the agency
