About The Position

Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute (SWVMHI) in Marion, VA is seeking Psychiatric Care Technicians/CNAs for the 12-hour PM Shift to join its Nursing Services Team. This role involves providing quality care as part of an interdisciplinary team, maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment, and fostering healthy interpersonal interactions on adult acute admissions, geriatric, and Extended Rehabilitation Service units. The position requires observing and reporting on patient interventions, treatments, behaviors, physical condition, emotional well-being, and documenting this information using specialized training for mental wellness recovery.

Requirements

  • Ability to distinguish between safe and unsafe patient behavior by observing, interacting, and listening
  • Ability to read, write and speak in the English language
  • Ability to observe, report and document changes in patients’ mental, physical and behavioral status
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions
  • Ability to maintain all required orientation and annual competencies
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with supervisors, co- workers and patients from varied backgrounds using effective interpersonal skills
  • Ability to recognize the need and ask for help or assistance in providing care and treatment
  • Ability to give and receive effective feedback and perform as a member of a team
  • Maintain CNA (Certified Nursing Aide) certification in good standing with the VA State Board of Nursing.
  • Will obtain certification as a C.N.A by the Virginia Board of Nursing within probationary period.
  • Knowledge of basic treatment measures to promote mental health appropriate to the adult, developmentally disabled or impaired, and/or geriatric populations.
  • Ability to work overtime in a staffing emergency.
  • Knowledge of personal care needs and activities of daily living.
  • Ability to carry out responsibilities of the position.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate effectively with others.
  • Ability to demonstrate competencies as defined on the C.N.A. competency assessment.

Nice To Haves

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent preferred.
  • Experience in a psychiatric, healthcare facility, acute care, long-term care, or correction setting is preferred.
  • Valid Driver's License preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Providing quality care as part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Maintaining accountability in a safe, secure, and therapeutic environment
  • Creating healthy interpersonal interactions on adult acute admissions unit, geriatric unit, and Extended Rehabilitation Service unit
  • Observing and reporting feedback regarding interventions, treatments, behaviors, physical condition, emotional well-being, and other situations
  • Documenting and communicating using specialized training for promoting mental wellness recovery
  • Administering CPR and performing Therapeutic Options approved physical interventions
  • Working overtime hours, rotating weekends, and holidays
  • Using email and electronic health records
  • Working in a secure and locked environment with individuals who are experiencing acute symptoms of mental illness and/or additional forensic/legal involvement
  • Turning, bending, and lifting non-ambulatory patients without restrictions
  • Providing direct patient care under supervision of licensed nursing staff
