About The Position

The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner is responsible for providing integrated consultation with patients, as well as with behavioral health and medical colleagues, and direct patient care including psychiatric diagnostic evaluation, psychiatric medication services, and other preventive, educational, and therapeutic behavioral health services. The position requires professional expertise and responsibility for ensuring services meet the needs of patients and are being provided in accordance with best practices, state and federal law, and CVCH policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Education: Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing. Successful completion of an accredited Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) program with emphasis in psychiatric care (Nurse Practitioner Certificate or Master’s Degree).
  • Certification/Licensure: Current Washington State Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) license with prescriptive privileges or eligibility to obtain licensure. Valid DEA Controlled Substance Registration Certification. ANCC certification as a “Clinical Specialist in Adult Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing” or “Adult Psychiatric and Mental Health NP” or ”Family Mental Health NP” preferred. Basic Life Support (BLS) required. ACLS or ATLS may be used to substitute for BLS. All Providers must be eligible for enrollment in Medicare and must not be currently opted out of the Medicare program
  • Experience: Two (2) years of experience as a practicing Nurse Practitioner in a clinical setting. Two (2) years experience in providing Psychiatric/Behavioral Health Care to mentally ill individuals preferred. Previous training and experience in community primary health care preferred. Experience working with low income, multi-ethnic populations.
  • Language Skills: English required.
  • Essential Technical/Motor Skills: Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing. Ability to write clear, concise and accurately. Knowledge of computer applications and equipment related to work. Must have basic computer and keyboarding skills and have the ability to enter data within company’s computer/software system; must demonstrate manual dexterity.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with other staff and management and with a wide range of consumers and constituencies and members of the public in a diverse community. Demonstrated skill in developing and maintaining productive work teams. Ability to work in a fast paced environment under stressful situations. Ability to work with and/or around persons who are chronically mentally ill. Skilled in interpersonal relationships. Ability to work effectively in a community health setting utilizing physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and support staff. An awareness and appreciation for both the health and socioeconomic needs of a low-income, underserved population.
  • Essential Physical Requirements: This job is performed mostly in a typical inside, office environment. Essential physical requirements of this job include: light physical effort; repetitive motions of wrists, hands, and/or fingers; standing, walking, lifting, reaching, kneeling, bending, stooping, pushing, and pulling; frequent sitting; lifting and/or moving items weighing up to 20 pounds; ability to read forms and computer screens and to read correspondence and other documents.

Knowledge of current psychotropic medications and their uses. Knowledge of federal and state standards for clinical practice.
  • Essential Sensory Requirements: Essential sensory requirements include the ability to: read computer keyboard, monitor, and documents; prepare and analyze documents; read extensively; see, recognize, and assess non-verbal behaviors of consumers as part of the intake process; hear, recognize, and assess verbal presentations of consumers; receive and convey detailed information orally, by telephone and in person; convey accurate and detailed instructions by speaking to others in person and by telephone. Must be able to visually distinguish correct colors.
  • Exposure to Hazards: Incumbents in these positions may be exposed to communicable diseases and bodily fluids. Incumbents will be working with persons who may be psychotic and present difficulty in maintaining control. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Responsibilities

  • Provides behavioral health clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment plans, and ongoing psychiatric medication services for patients.
  • Reviews, initiates, and maintains psychiatric medications for patients until referred back to PCP or alternate provider.
  • May assist in clinical supervision, shadowing of patient care, and oversight with student trainees, as requested.
  • Coordinates client care as part of the Primary Care Medical Home Model to assist with improved communication and care.
  • May provide psychiatric oversight to Managed Care Organizations CVCH is contracted with.
  • Responsible for documentation according to organizational, federal, and state guidelines.
  • Maintains credentials essential for practice, to include licensure, certification, and CPE.
  • Attends CVCH Behavioral Health and Medical Provider meetings and represents the organization at any appropriate community committee as directed by the Behavioral Health Director.
  • Performs other duties and tasks as assigned by supervisor.
  • Expected to meet attendance standards and work the hours necessary to perform the essential functions of the job.

  • Follows all established policies, guidelines, and procedures, including federal and state regulations to assure safe practices and quality patient care. Includes following of Universal Precautions and Infection Control Standards and compliance with Joint Commission and HIPAA regulations.
