This position involves interviewing patients upon arrival to assess their status and explain their rights. The specialist will distribute required patient information, enter and correct patient data in automated systems, and produce reports. They will also notify relevant parties of discharges or elopements, safeguard patient valuables, and update the electronic Bed Board in real time. Additionally, the role provides reception coverage outside of normal business hours and during staff shortages, offers back-up support for Medical Records by obtaining and copying records, and fields calls related to electronic medical record issues. The position also receives referrals for involuntary mental health patients statewide, ensuring all community resources have been exhausted, admissions meet hospital criteria, correct procedures are followed, and referrals are approved. Technical assistance and data reporting are provided to the care management team to facilitate information flow and patient transfers. Detailed data collection and basic analytic reports are associated with referrals, admission/disposition criteria, legal status, involuntary medication, and emergency procedures. Daily morning updates are sent to the care management system. The specialist also receives and processes requests for patient transport/supervision from designated hospitals, care managers, or QMHPs, faxes requests, follows through to ensure delivery, and schedules requests, notifying the requesting agency of the status. Finally, this role serves as the primary point of contact for all emergencies at VPCH, monitoring the emergency line, responding to medical/psychiatric emergencies, and acting as a liaison with emergency responders. They monitor all communications, elevate as necessary, and monitor the paging system to page staff for emergency situations.
