About The Position

This is a full-time Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) position in the psycho-oncology department within cancer care services at Stanford Palo Alto. The provider will work independently under the supervision and mentorship of Psych MDs. Responsibilities include seeing new consults, providing behavioral and psychotherapy, managing medications, and addressing urgent patient needs. The role is a full-time 1.0 FTE position with 10-hour days, likely Monday through Thursday, though the schedule may be adjusted based on team needs. There is also an opportunity to participate in quality improvement initiatives, research, and potential group therapy pilots. This is a fully benefited exempt position and a Stanford Health Care job. The NP functions under an approved Nurse Practitioner Job Description and provides routine care and management of patients with acute and chronic complaints in collaboration with a supervising physician, implementing standardized procedures. Specific functions are established by the NP and supervising physician, approved by various committees and boards. All NPs must meet essential functions, qualifications, and supervision requirements. A voluntary Career Ladder is available for NPs interested in promotion based on clinical expertise and contributions.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in a work related Discipline/Field from an accredited College or University
  • Graduate of an NP Program Accredited by the National League of Nursing Commission for Nusing Education Accreditation (CNEA) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)
  • NP - Nurse Practitioner
  • Nursing\RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure And/Or Compact State Licensure
  • BLS - Basic Life Support
  • NPF - NP Furnishing Number
  • Ability to provide only those medical services which he/she is competent to perform, which are consistent with the NP’s education/population foci, training and experience, and which are performed under the supervision of a physician who is responsible for the patients cared for by that NP.
  • Must consult with a physician regarding any task, procedure or diagnostic problem which the NP determines exceeds his/her level of competence or shall refer such cases to a collaborating physician.
  • Evaluates and treats patients with acute, chronic complaints and health maintenance concerns related to specialty, according to written standardized procedures.
  • Administers, orders, furnishes and prescribes medications, according to written standardized procedures.
  • Recognizes and considers age-specific needs of patients.
  • Effectively communicates and interacts with patients, families, staff and members of the community from diverse backgrounds.
  • Recognizes situations which require the immediate attention of a physician, and initiates life-saving procedures when necessary.
  • Ensures compliance with legal, regulatory and clinical policies and procedures.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Provides and coordinates patient teaching and counseling.

Responsibilities

  • See new consults
  • Provide behavioral and psychotherapy

  • Obtain complete histories and perform pertinent physical exams with assessment of normal and abnormal findings on new and return patients
  • Perform or request and evaluate diagnostic studies as indicated
  • Administer, order, furnish and prescribe medications
  • Order and collect specimens for routine laboratory tests, screening procedures and therapeutic procedures, including blood and blood products
  • Order physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, radiology examinations and nursing services
  • Perform designated procedures after demonstrated competency
  • Obtain informed consent, as indicated
  • Initiate arrangements for hospital admissions and discharges and complete appropriate paperwork
  • Enroll patients in investigational studies approved by the Investigational Review Board (IRB), and order the necessary tests and medications
  • Assist the supervising physician in the operating room after appropriate training
  • Recognize and consider age-specific needs of patients
  • Effectively communicate and interact with patients, families, staff and members of the community from diverse backgrounds
  • Recognize situations which require the immediate attention of a physician, and initiate life-saving procedures when necessary
  • Facilitate the coordination of inpatient and outpatient care and services as needed
  • Facilitate collaboration between providers and coordination of community resources
  • Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory and clinical policies and procedures
