About The Position

The Prototyping Technician I is an entry-level member of the Mechanical Engineering, Prototyping and Automation group, part of Galvion’s Engineering & R&D department. Reporting to the Prototyping Supervisor, this position supports the fabrication of mock-ups, prototypes, jigs and fixtures required to validate concepts during the new product development and product improvement processes. The Prototyping Technician I provides hands-on assistance to designers and engineers, learns the proper use of prototyping equipment, develops basic mechanical and electrical/electronic assembly skills, and contributes feedback to help optimize design concepts before release for production.

Requirements

  • DEP, AEC or first year of CEGEP/college program in Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Design, Drafting, Electromechanical Technology, or a related field.
  • 0–2 years of practical experience (recent graduates encouraged to apply).
  • Basic manual skills for prototyping with small hand tools and common shop equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical and electronic principles, including soldering, simple circuit assembly and the ability to read basic wiring diagrams and schematics.
  • Basic knowledge of SolidWorks, Illustrator and Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated willingness to learn and accept direction.
  • Strong English and French verbal communication and writing skills required.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with technologies, materials and manufacturing methods for plastics, composites and rapid prototyping is a plus.
  • Knowledge of standard design and drawing practices is a plus.
  • Experience in a production or shop environment is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Military and Personal Protective Equipment standards is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the fabrication of mock-ups and prototypes per direction from the Prototyping Supervisor and senior technicians.
  • Operates basic hand tools, power tools and rapid prototyping equipment (3D printers, laser cutter, basic CNC, etc.) under supervision.
  • Performs basic electrical and electronic assembly tasks, including soldering, wire harness preparation, simple circuit assembly and reading of basic wiring diagrams and schematics.
  • Helps maintain the cleanliness, organization and 5S standards of the prototype shop.
  • Records and documents prototype iterations, materials used, build steps and observations.
  • Supports the operation, basic preventive maintenance and inspection of rapid prototyping equipment.
  • Supports the design and engineering teams with basic CAD tasks, simple drafting and supplier/manufacturer communication as directed.
  • Supports Production with the fabrication of simple jigs, templates and fixtures.
  • Other duties as required.
