About The Position

We are seeking a skilled Prototype Trim Technician to join our Seat Laboratory team. This role involves the precise cutting and preparation of trim covers, expert sewing and assembly of trim components, and the final build and assembly of complete seats. The technician will also be responsible for ensuring quality standards, documenting production, maintaining a safe work environment, and collaborating with cross-functional teams for continuous improvement. This position is crucial for supporting prototype builds, trials, and engineering changes for new seat designs and materials.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5+ years of experience in seat trim sewing, upholstery, automotive interiors, furniture upholstery, or closely related manufacturing/production work.
  • Proven ability to cut and sew complex trim patterns to tight tolerances.
  • Experience assembling complete seats or similar upholstered assemblies from component level to finished product.
  • Proficiency operating industrial sewing machines and related equipment (cutters, skivers, binders, sergers, etc.).
  • Ability to read and interpret patterns, drawings, work instructions, and digital layouts.
  • Comfortable using basic manufacturing systems and interfaces, including: Pattern or nesting software (Optitex or equivalent), HMI screens or terminals for work orders and production tracking, Basic reporting and quality documentation systems.
  • Strong attention to detail in stitch quality, seam alignment, and overall appearance.
  • Ability to self-inspect work and correct defects at the source.
  • Strong commitment to quality and consistency.
  • Ability to identify fit, finish, and functional issues and resolve them with cross-functional teams (engineering, quality, production).
  • Strong communication skills in a production environment.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced team setting.
  • Ability to stand, bend, and reach for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and move seat components and materials within safe limits.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret patterns, work instructions, and digital cutting layouts for seat trim covers.
  • Cut fabric, leather, vinyl, and other materials to specification using manual and automated cutting tools.
  • Inspect materials for defects, ensuring correct grain, orientation, and color matching prior to cutting.
  • Label and organize cut parts to support efficient workflow to sewing and seat build stations.
  • Operate industrial sewing machines (single-needle, double-needle, overlock, walking foot, etc.) to sew seat trim components.
  • Assemble seams, top-stitching, and decorative features to meet quality, safety, and durability standards.
  • Apply foam, scrim, and reinforcements per build specifications.
  • Perform in-process quality checks on stitch quality, seam allowances, and dimensional accuracy.
  • Install finished trim covers onto seat cushions, backs, headrests, and armrests.
  • Assemble seat components including frames, foam, plastics, and hardware per work instructions.
  • Use hand tools and power tools to complete mechanical assembly safely and accurately.
  • Verify fit, finish, and functional operation of completed seats (adjusters, recliners, headrests, etc.).
  • Follow standard operating procedures, quality standards, and inspection criteria.
  • Document production results, defects, and rework in required systems or forms.
  • Escalate quality issues, equipment concerns, and process deviations promptly.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in alignment with 5S and EHS standards.
  • Provide feedback on patterns, methods, and tooling to improve quality and efficiency.
  • Support prototype builds, trials, and engineering changes for new seat designs and materials.
  • Collaborate with engineering, quality, and production teams to resolve build issues and implement improvements.
