About The Position

The Protective Services Security Officer serves as a visible, professional presence responsible for the safety and security of patients, visitors, staff, and organizational assets. This role encompasses proactive patrol, access control, emergency response, and exceptional customer service, reflective of the organization’s commitment to a safe and welcoming environment. Officers are trained to identify, assess, and tactfully intervene in situations posing risk to people or property, utilizing de-escalation techniques and, when authorized, less-lethal defensive tools per policy. Officers are also cross-trained to operate the Security Operations Center (SOC), monitoring access control, surveillance systems, and facility-wide communications.

Requirements

High School diploma or GED required.
Minimum of 4 years of security experience in a professional environment required, preferably within a healthcare, corporate, or institutional setting.
Demonstrated experience in patrol operations, access control, incident response, and written documentation is expected at time of hire.
Possession of a valid Denver Security Guard License is required or must be obtained within the first thirty (30) days of employment as a condition of continued employment.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association or equivalent accredited provider is required or must be obtained within the first thirty (30) days of employment.
A valid state-issued Driver’s License with an acceptable Driving record as determined by organizational standards is required at time of higher.
FEMA IS-100.C: Introduction to the Incident Command System, ICS 100 is required or must be obtained within the first thirty (30) days of employment as a condition of continued employment.
FEMA IS-907.A: Active Shooter: What You Can Do- is required or must be obtained within the first thirty (30) days of employment as a condition of continued employment.
Demonstrate proficiency in the use of a Conducted Energy Weapon (TASER) by achieving a minimum passing score of 80% on both the written examination and practical skills assessment within 30 days of hire.
All candidates must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening test.
All candidates must successfully complete pre-employment background screening and fit-for-duty psychological fitness evaluation prior to receiving a formal offer of employment.
Continued employment is contingent upon ongoing demonstration of the character and professional integrity required of a Protective Services Officer.
Candidates must be able to demonstrate proficiency or the ability to learn all equipment, systems, and technologies utilized by the Protective Services department.

Nice To Haves

Prior military service or law enforcement experience is strongly preferred.
Candidates with backgrounds in emergency services, corrections, or behavioral health crisis response are also encouraged to apply.
Qualified candidates will have a verifiable history of sound judgment under pressure, professional conduct in high-stakes environments, and the ability to engage diverse populations with discretion, empathy, and authority.
Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) or equivalent de-escalation certification(s).
Conducted Energy Device (Taser) certification(s).
IAHSS Basic Security Officer certification or equivalent.

Responsibilities

Conducts proactive patrol of hospital grounds, buildings, and parking areas to detect and deter unauthorized persons or vehicles; engages individuals for questioning, initiates law enforcement response, or takes necessary protective action to ensure the safety of staff, patients, and visitors as circumstances warrant.
Identifies, assesses, and mitigates risks that could impact the safety, security, or day-to-day operations of the facility.
Applies verbal de-escalation techniques to manage conflict.
Authorized in the deployment of less-lethal tools including Conducted Energy Devices (Taser), ensuring all interventions are consistent with de-escalation principles, departmental policy, and applicable regulatory standards.
Performs systematic security inspections of doors, windows, gates, and access points to verify integrity and identify tampering or vulnerabilities.
Monitors and enforces parking compliance in restricted areas.
Inspects exterior lighting, access routes, and emergency and fire ingress points to ensure operational readiness.
Provides safe escort services for staff, patients, and visitors between buildings and NJH parking areas upon request.
Delivers customer assistance services, including emergency vehicle battery support, to employees, patients, and visitors as needed.
Serves as a way-finding resource, directing patients and visitors to offices, departments, and facility areas with professionalism and courtesy.
Accurately documents and reports incidents, security observations, and events in accordance with departmental policy and chain of command reporting standards.
Monitors and operates the Security Operations Center (SOC), including surveillance systems, access control platforms, alarm management, and radio communications in support of facility-wide safety operations.
Supports departmental goals and operational priorities by undertaking additional responsibilities and initiatives as assigned by security leadership.
