About The Position

Under the guidance and direction of leadership, the Manager of Protective Services is responsible for the implementation of proactive security management protection measures, ensuring regular patrols are conducted for risk hazardous avoidance, enforcing established organizational safety and security policies, and supporting a positive customer – friendly service-oriented approach. The Protective Services Manager is responsible for the daily operation of Protective Services. They will ensure compliance with regulatory agencies and act as the Director of Protective Services in his/her absence. Assists with investigations as requested/needed.

Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Associate's degree
  • 3-5 years of experience in police, safety, or security field
  • Supervisory experience
  • Basic Skills using Microsoft Word
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use, maintenance, and safety protocols for defensive tools and restraint equipment (e.g., batons, handcuffs, body-worn cameras, soft restraints), in alignment with healthcare regulations and organizational policies.
  • Maintain strong technical skills in radio communication, report writing, surveillance systems, and access control software, with the ability to accurately document incidents and coordinate effectively with clinical teams and law enforcement.
  • Effective communication, active listening, empathy, conflict resolution, problem solving, and critical thinking

  • Ohio Specific – Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy Certification (mandatory for police hires, recommended for all others)

  • Firearms qualifications; successfully pass bi-annual firearms qualifications.
  • Completion of Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) Chief of Police Training Course (required within six months of hire for Ohio residents)

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the 24/7 supervision of the Mercy Health Protective Services Operations.
  • Manage and prepare staffing schedules, shift assignments, and find replacements when staffing shortages arise.
  • Conduct quarterly check-ins with department employees.
  • Ensure compliance with annual competency training required for individual positions and any mandatory organizational training.
  • Ensure employee compliance with established Bon Secours Mercy Health policies and procedures.
  • Ensure timecards are completed and accurate.
  • Coordinate with the recruitment department on the hiring of new employees and all new hire orientation and onboarding processes.
  • Have direct input into any disciplinary / coaching actions and ensure they are documented appropriately and comply with Human Resources policies and procedures.
  • Develop and establish operating policies consistent with overall policies and objectives and ensure their adequate execution.
  • Evaluate overall operations regularly and systematically and periodically report these results to their respective Director/Leader.
  • Introduce performance improvement initiatives and ensure compliance with federal and state regulatory agencies (i.e., NFPA-Fire, EPA, OSHA, ODH, Joint Commission and other appropriate regulatory agencies) related to protective services, fire safety management and security management.
  • Participate in various committees as requested or assigned.
  • Assist Risk Management, Corporate Compliance, Legal Services, and other departments with investigations as requested.
  • Ensure Joint Commission/CMS/ODH/OSHA regulatory standards are met for the Protective Services Department.
  • Manage department resources in a manner consistent with departmental budgets and productivity.
  • Foster the spirit of team collaboration, support inter-disciplinary work teams, and partnership.
  • Develop relationships with internal and external customers and community partners (i.e., Fire Department, federal and state law enforcement agencies, EMS, Courts, Correctional Facilities, and others).
  • Support ongoing communication and provide organizational updates to staff.
  • Participate in gathering, investigating, researching, and analyzing of data and/or initiating studies and/or activities to assess their effect on an organization/system-wide basis or intra/interdepartmental operations.
  • Select, train/orient and assign staff.
  • Develop standards of performance, evaluate performance, and initiate or make recommendations on personnel actions.
  • Collaborate in the development and preparation of short-term and long-range plans and budgets based upon broad area goals, which support the organization’s mission and strategic plan.
