About The Position

Northrop Grumman Defense Systems is currently seeking an experienced Propulsion Engineer – Structural Analysis – Level 3/4 to support our Solid Rocket Motor development efforts. The position will be located in Huntsville, Alabama. This Northrop Grumman facility in Elkton, Maryland began solid-propellant rocket operations in 1948. Today, the Elkton facility designs, develops, and produces solid-propellant propulsion and ordnance systems in programs professionally managed for a wide variety of Government and commercial customers. The facility also serves as the hub for offsite engineering and test facilities in Ronkonkoma, NY, and Palm Beach Gardens, FL.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in STEM plus 5 years of related experience or Master’s Degree in STEM plus at least 3 years of related experience (for Level 3)
  • Bachelor’s Degree in STEM plus 8 years of related experience or Master’s Degree in STEM plus at least 6 years of related experience (for Level 4)
  • Experience in modeling with FEA software (ABAQUS, NASTRAN, ANSYS, FEMAP, or equivalent)
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and present analytical results in both oral and written formats.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, writing, presentation and critical thinking skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to obtain a Secret Clearance which requires US Citizenship as a pre-requisite

Nice To Haves

  • Degree in Aerospace Engineering or Mechanical Engineering
  • Current Active Security Clearance
  • Experience in modeling systems with material and geometric non-linearities involving large deformations and contact
  • Experience in modeling systems subject to high temperature environments undergoing ablation and material decomposition
  • Knowledge of advanced material modeling concepts such as metal plasticity, elastomeric behavior, and composite materials
  • Knowledge of system modeling tools such as, Matlab/Simulink, or equivalents.
  • Experience using NX solid modeling software

Responsibilities

  • Conduct structural analyses in support of solid rocket motor propulsion system design and verification activities.
  • Create mathematical models to match the physics of the system under evaluation including proper analysis methods/tools, proper boundary conditions, and appropriate material properties
  • Assist project team in design of experiments testing to provide necessary data to support detailed analyses.
  • Help in interpretation of analytical results and develop recommendations pertinent to system improvement.
  • Prepare and present technical reports and presentations of work product to both internal and external customers.
  • Support technical assessments of test hardware and test data including validation of analysis
  • Support propulsion and subsystem IPT leads to ensure technical and cost execution of each system component.
  • Form close working relationships with the customer technical community and specific customer technical points of contact.
