The engineer will perform Materials & Processes work related to metallic additive manufacturing for spaceflight systems, contributing to material characterization, design for producibility, and component qualification. The position supports additive manufacturing hardware and processes at Blue Origin’s in-house facilities and works across engineering and production functions to help ensure safe, reliable human spaceflight.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in materials science, materials engineering, or a related field, and at least 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Principal-investigator experience in process development and optimization of metallic additive manufacturing processes.
  • Hands-on experience measuring, analyzing, developing, and characterizing additive manufacturing of nickel (such as Inconel), aluminum, and copper alloys.
  • Experience managing technology-development projects, measuring technical progress and resources, and managing budgets.
  • Experience with powder metallurgy.
  • Hands-on skills with SEM, EDS, EBSD, IGF, PSD measurements, XRF, ICP, and OES.
  • Experience developing and executing test plans for analysis and qualification of components or materials.
  • Experience developing and executing experimental plans, analyzing data, and concisely reporting results.

  • Failure and forensic analysis experience.
  • Experience with statistical analysis and preparation of design allowables.

Responsibilities

  • Lead tactical and strategic efforts within a cross-functional Materials & Processes team supporting additive manufacturing and hardware at Blue Origin’s in-house facilities.
  • Develop additive manufacturing processes, parameters, requirements, and specifications for existing and novel metallic materials.
  • Lead test campaigns to design, collect, and analyze material-property data for internally produced additively manufactured metallic materials and engine hardware.
  • Collaborate with design, manufacturing, quality, and integration engineers to implement requirements throughout additive manufacturing phases, with robust production solutions and design for manufacture.
  • Execute root-cause and corrective-action efforts for additive manufacturing builds.
  • Optimize and production-harden additive manufacturing processes to increase throughput and decrease variability.
  • Contribute to internal engineering and quality processes that standardize and accelerate material evaluation and implementation.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Basic and supplemental life insurance.
