As a Property Tax Specialist, you will ensure compliance with state and federal laws by conducting audits of property tax exempt applications for both real and personal property while maintaining quality customer service.

Requirements

  • An associate's degree and experience in accounting, auditing, finance, or tax preparation/analysis OR A bachelor's degree with multiple accounting courses may be substituted for the work experience OR Relevant experience or education may be substituted on a year-for-year basis with an approved equivalence by the Division of State Human Resources (DSHR)
  • Academic degrees must be from an accredited institution of higher learning.

Responsibilities

  • Approving, denying, or placing on hold exemption applications for real and personal property tax by conducting audits and analyzing data provided by taxpayers and/or county officials to determine compliance with state and federal laws
  • Examining and processing appeals for property tax exempt accounts to determine the accuracy and completeness of an appeal request with additional research as needed
  • Providing all documentation and appeal requests to the litigation unit
  • Researching and interpreting tax laws, internal guidelines, and other information or documentation to resolve outstanding issues or discrepancies
  • Communicating effectively with taxpayers, representatives, county auditors, property analysts, and personnel by phone, email, or other written correspondence
  • Utilizing various internal computer systems and internet resources to research, audit, assess and make corrections to property tax exempt applications
  • Working with property analysts to order field checks on real property as needed per county request and to support exemption applications
