About The Position

The Child Development Institute (CDI) is seeking a Property Manager for Camp Towhee, CDI's overnight summer Therapeutic Recreation Program. This role involves overseeing the camp property during the spring, summer, and fall months, ensuring the safety, cleanliness, and hygiene of the camp to support the well-being of campers and staff. The position is a four-month contract from June to September 2026, with the possibility of annual renewal. The role offers a profound purpose, as the camp provides a safe and supportive outdoor environment for children and youth with mental health challenges and learning disabilities, allowing them to build confidence and create memories. The Property Manager will play a direct role in maintaining cabins, trails, docks, and shared spaces, ensuring the camp is safe, functional, and ready for daily programs.

Requirements

  • Experience in a hands-on maintenance or facilities role.
  • Skilled with hand and power tools and able to complete repairs safely and independently.
  • Understanding of the pace, seasonality, and safety requirements of maintaining both indoor and outdoor facilities, including waterfront areas, kitchens and dining halls, cabins, and washrooms.
  • Comfortable with the physical nature of the work, including being on your feet, working outdoors in varying weather, and lifting or moving materials up to 50 lbs as needed.
  • Professional interaction with campers, families, visitors, and staff.
  • Willingness to take on on-call responsibilities and respond promptly to urgent maintenance needs.
  • Hold a valid G Driver’s Licence with a clean driving record.
  • Willingness to use your vehicle for site-related duties when required.
  • Comfortable operating a 15-passenger vehicle.
  • Have, or be willing to obtain as part of CDI training, certification to operate a small drinking water system.
  • Understand the need to maintain professional boundaries with campers at all times.
  • Approach maintenance challenges with practical problem-solving skills, assess options thoughtfully, and take responsible action within established guidelines.
  • Successful completion of a Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Credential verifications and references are required.
  • Proof of measles vaccination is required.

Nice To Haves

  • An F licence is considered an asset.
  • Experience with portaging and pitching tents or traditional cabins.

Responsibilities

  • Complete general maintenance, cleaning, and repairs across the camp as directed by the Manager, Facilities and Administration, and the Camp Director.
  • Open and close the property seasonally, including managing water systems.
  • Ensure all buildings and grounds are safe, functional, and well-maintained.
  • Complete approved maintenance requests in a timely manner and take on additional projects as required.
  • Monitor and maintain the drinking water system, including daily testing and submitting samples to Public Health.
  • Collect and dispose of garbage throughout the site daily and transport waste to the local dump during the camp season.
  • Proactively identify and address potential property concerns before they escalate.
  • Regularly inspect camp program areas and equipment to ensure safety and cleanliness, and repair unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Liaise daily with Kitchen and Catering staff to support smooth operations and ensure facilities meet program needs.
  • Track maintenance expenses, manage purchasing within budget, and order cleaning and paper supplies as required.
  • Communicate property needs and updates to the Camp Director daily and ensure accurate reporting of any issues.
  • Supervise maintenance assistants and meet regularly with the Camp Director for supervision and debriefing.
  • Participate fully as part of the staff team, working cooperatively across departments, supporting camp policies, and serving as a positive role model for staff and campers.
  • Visit the camp weekly from September through March to inspect buildings and grounds for damage or concerns and report findings to the Manager, Facilities and Administration.
  • Remove snow from roofs and critical areas as needed to protect infrastructure.
