About The Position

Founded in 1960, the Youth Services Bureau of Ottawa (YSB) is one of the largest and most comprehensive non-profit agencies in Ottawa and a registered charity. It provides mental health services, employment programs, emergency shelter, community, health and housing services, and justice programs to youth in the Ottawa area, serving between 2,500 and 3,000 at‑risk individuals aged 12+ and their families every month. YSB employs 350 caring professionals in a unionized environment in over 21 locations across Ottawa. At Youth Services Bureau of Ottawa (YSB), we are committed to providing safe, affordable and well-maintained housing that supports the well-being of our tenants. Reporting to the Manager, Property Services, the Property Maintenance Woker is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance, repair and upkeep of YSB’s residential properties. They play an important role in ensuring YSB’s buildings remain safe, functional and welcoming for tenants.

Requirements

  • Completion of a college program in facility operation or property maintenance or an equivalent combination of technical training and experience.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in property, building or facilities maintenance
  • Demonstrated knowledge of general maintenance practices including plumbing, carpentry, painting, and drywall repairs
  • Knowledge of health & social issues facing youth at risk
  • Strong ability to diagnose maintenance issues and suggest, or implement effective solutions
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting, climbing and working indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of the Residential Tenancy Act considered an asset
  • Valid Driver’s license and access to reliable transportation a strong asset
  • Experience working in non-profit, supportive, social or affordable housing environments
  • Knowledge of Ontario Fire Code, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Residential Tenancies Act, and building systems
  • Additional trade certification, or technical training

Responsibilities

  • Complete maintenance work orders in tenant homes, common areas and building systems
  • Perform general repairs including plumbing, carpentry, drywall, painting, flooring and minor appliance repairs
  • Conduct regular inspections of buildings, grounds and equipment to identify maintenance needs and safety concerns
  • Prepare vacant units for occupancy, including repairs, painting, cleaning and minor renovations
  • Assist with preventative maintenance programs to maximize the life of building components and equipment
  • Respond promptly to maintenance emergencies and urgent service requests to minimise disruptions and ensure the safety and functionality of the buildings
  • Maintain and control supplies, equipment and tool inventories ensuring items are properly stored, accounted for and available when required
  • Respond to tenant maintenance requests in a professional, respectful and promptly timely manner
  • Communicate effectively with tenants regarding repairs, scheduling, unit access, and ensuring to communicate after what was completed
  • Contribute to a positive living environment through excellent customer service and respectful interactions
  • Maintain building grounds, walkways, parking areas and landscaped areas, and following up with Contractors regarding their performance.
  • Salting sidewalks in winter months to support safe access and prevent skip and fall hazards
  • Ensure that all exterior areas are safe, clean and accessible for tenants and visitors
  • Assist Manager, Property Services with coordinating and monitoring contractors and service providers
  • Participate as appropriate in procurement process, including identifying needs, obtaining required information and supporting with the acquisition process in accordance with YSB procedures
  • Ensure familiarity with contractors, their practices and the Service Agreements
  • Monitor contractors and provide feedback on performance to Manager, Property Services
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, maintenance activities, and completed work orders
  • Support property improvement projects and capital maintenance initiatives
  • Support compliance with applicable building, fire, health and safety regulations and inspections
  • Participate in fire safety inspections, testing and emergency preparedness activities
  • Promptly report hazards, deficiencies and maintenance concerns
  • Participate in on-call schedule rotation, when assigned
  • Follow safe work practices in accordance with applicable health and safety regulations, building code and established YSB policies
