About The Position

Conducts routine patrols and responds to complaints to identify and investigate property maintenance, zoning, and nuisance violations. Inspects residential, commercial, and vacant properties, including those that may be unsafe, unsanitary, deteriorated, or contain hazardous conditions such as excessive debris, strong odors, pests, or other environmental concerns. Interprets and applies City and State codes to determine compliance and works with property owners, tenants, contractors, and the public to achieve compliance. Operates a City vehicle daily while traveling throughout the City to conduct inspections and investigations. Documents inspections through reports, photographs, evidence collection, and records sufficient for administrative or court proceedings. Prepares violation notices, remediation contracts, and court documents; provides testimony as needed. Assists with enforcement of the Zoning Ordinance and other code requirements, including inoperative motor vehicles. Provides information and assistance to citizens, contractors, and City officials regarding code enforcement matters. Uses professionalism, sound judgment, and conflict de-escalation skills when interacting with individuals who may be upset, confrontational, or resistant to enforcement activities. Supports efforts to eliminate unsafe conditions and reduce neighborhood blight through code enforcement activities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in, or demonstrated knowledge of one or more of the following areas: Building construction, property management; building, housing, or fire inspections; plumbing, electrical, or mechanical trades; fire protection systems, elevator inspections or maintenance, code enforcement, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
  • Valid driver's license required.

Nice To Haves

  • Must obtain and maintain certification as a Property Maintenance Inspector through the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) within twelve (12) months of hire.
