About The Position

Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary is seeking a Property Maintenance and Landscape Worker to support the mission of the Seminary by maintaining an aesthetically appealing campus. This position reports to the Director of Operations and involves a work week of Monday through Friday, 2pm to 10pm, for 40 hours per week. The role requires a focus on day-to-day maintenance and upkeep of both interior and exterior spaces on the Charlotte campus, including landscaping, securing the facility, supporting compliance and prevention efforts, and coordinating event setups.

Requirements

  • Ability to operate powered equipment and hand tools.
  • Ability to set up/take down furniture and equipment.
  • Physically capable of lifting 25 pounds.
  • Appropriate knowledge of machines and tools including their design, use, and maintenance.
  • Ability to coordinate general and preventative maintenance (e.g., painting, HVAC pm, electrical, plumbing, grounds).
  • Experience and creativity with plants, flowers, and garden beds.
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to demonstrate empathy with students, coworkers, and constituents.
  • Strong oral and writing communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills in word processing, spreadsheet development and internet access.
  • Capable to make decisions independently and problem-solve.
  • Strong time and project management skills while balancing multiple priorities.
  • Creativity in use of limited resources (e.g., purchasing choices, engagement of volunteers).
  • Clear understanding of the mission of the Seminary and willingness to abide by the Community Life Statement of GCTS.
  • High school or GED required.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s degree preferred.
  • 5+ years experience in general maintenance, drywall, painting, gardening and/or landscaping preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains outdoor spaces, including flower beds, by weeding, mulching, planting, trimming, watering, and fertilizing.
  • Cleans walkways, seating areas, and signage; pressure washes surfaces; removes litter; checks for hazards; performs touch-up painting; and maintains outdoor lighting.
  • Plans and designs garden layouts, selects and installs plants, and maintains landscaped areas through watering, fertilizing, pruning, and mulching.
  • Handles plant health care, removes overgrowth, refreshes soil and mulch, and updates designs to improve appearance and functionality.
  • Responsible for securely closing the facility ensuring all occupants have left, locking doors and windows, shutting down equipment, turning off lights, inspecting for maintenance or safety issues, securing entrances, and checking restrooms and common areas for cleanliness.
  • Ensures facility compliance with building codes, safety regulations, and health standards through routine inspections, preventative maintenance, and general repairs.
  • Servicing critical systems, addressing minor electrical, plumbing, and structural issues, and keeping accurate maintenance records for audits.
  • Responsible for invoice submissions.
  • Manages setup and breakdown of events and classes, including arranging furniture, staging, AV equipment, decorations, and hospitality items.
  • Coordinates with staff, ensures proper storage and cleanup, and reports damages.
  • Other tasks as assigned, which may include answering phones, monitoring building access, or cleaning restrooms.
