About The Position

The Ohio Department of Administrative Services (DAS) is seeking a Property & Casualty Claims Specialist 2 to join the Office of Risk Management. This office provides comprehensive risk management programs and services to the executive, judicial, and legislative branches of state government. The role is responsible for the administration of self-insurance and private insurance programs protecting the assets and liabilities of the State of Ohio. The specialist will investigate, adjust, and settle various types of claims, manage litigation, process claim documents, analyze data, evaluate claims, and negotiate settlements. They will also provide guidance to lower-level claims specialists and make recommendations for training and new procedures. The position involves obtaining information from various sources, answering inquiries, authorizing vehicle rentals, assigning adjusters, and recovering monies for damages to state property. Maintaining accurate and complete claim files, preparing reports, and attending meetings are also key responsibilities. Requirements

  • 48 mos. exp. in processing insurance claims which included 12 mos. exp. in catastrophic property & casualty claims.
  • Or completion of undergraduate core coursework in business, public administration, or related field; 24 mos. exp. processing property, liability & subrogation claims which includes 12 mos. in catastrophic property & casualty claims.
  • Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.
  • Knowledge of Insurance claims processing
  • Knowledge of Liability & subrogation laws, rules, policies, & procedures
  • Knowledge of Insurance codes & regulations
  • Knowledge of Public relations
  • Knowledge of Claims insurance investigation
  • Knowledge of Customer service techniques
  • Skill in Operation of personal computer & related hardware/software (e.g., MS Word, Excel, Access, Outlook)
  • Ability to Define problems, collect data, estab-lish facts & draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to Gather, collage, & classify infor-mation about data, people, or things
  • Ability to Handle sensitive & sometimes hostile inquiries & contacts with officials & public
  • Ability to Negotiate fair & reasonable settlement of claims

  • Ability to Maintain accurate records

Responsibilities

  • Investigates, adjusts & settles catastrophic & non-catastrophic claims to include property damage, bodily injury, subrogation, judicial liability, personal injury, catastrophic property, crime & bonding & public entity liability including, but not limited to, general liability, premises liability, public official liability, employment practices liability, police professional liability, professional liability, medical malpractice, wrongful death, civil rights violations & other property & casualty claims, according to rules, regulations, guidelines & established agency policy & procedures & Ohio Revised Code
  • Manages litigation
  • Processes claim documents in timely & accurate manner
  • Analyzes data & uses sound judgment to establish case re-serves
  • Evaluates claims & negotiates monetary settlements & identi-fies potential defense strategies
  • Performs ongoing review of liability insurance law & revi-sions
  • Provides guidance, direction & training to lower-level claims specialists
  • Makes recommendations to Claims Manager & Risk Administrator on training & new procedures which impacts unit
  • Obtains information from agency personnel & claimants via telephone, written form, &/or in person
  • Answers inquiries from claimants & attorneys concerning claim processes; claimants regarding lost wages & attorneys, body shops, & insurance companies for policy & claim related information
  • Authorizes vehicle rentals
  • Assigns independent adjusters & salvage companies
  • Recovers monies for losses to state-owned equipment & real estate for damage sustained in not-at-fault incidents
  • Maintains accurate & complete claim files
  • Ensures all pertinent information is in file for future audits
  • Updates claim information electronically
  • Prepares reports concerning various activities
  • Attends meetings
  • Performs other duties as required
