About The Position

The Wake County Sheriff's Office is seeking a Property and Evidence Custodian responsible for receiving, documenting, storing, and maintaining the integrity and security of all items of property and evidence submitted to the Office. This role ensures that property and physical evidence are properly tagged, preserved, stored, and safeguarded. The custodian will monitor and arrange for the disposition of each item as soon as possible, determining and implementing appropriate disposition methods. This includes coordinating with local, state, and Federal law enforcement agencies regarding stolen and recovered property and evidence preservation, and assisting investigators with evidence collected during search warrants, as well as coordinating the disposal of narcotics and hazardous chemicals.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate, manage, organize, and perform all necessary evidence/property control functions in the Evidence/Property Department.
  • Log, record, and enter data.
  • Generate and maintain various reports on evidence/property in custody or storage.
  • Dispense, dispose, and release property in an appropriate and legal manner, in accordance with established guidelines of evidence and property.
  • Properly store and maintain evidence/property in various facilities utilized by the department.
  • Research case files, microfilm, computerized records, reports, and contacts/interacts with other units and agencies in order to facilitate disposal of evidence.
  • Conduct local and LEAD/NCIC computer file searches and queries on weapons and other items of evidence for information.
  • Perform FOID background checks on firearm owners prior to transfer and release.
  • Conduct ECOURSE and EWARRANTS.
  • Research, analyze, and determine the rightful owner of property, evidence, and found items.
  • Provide notification to property owners, schedule appointments, release items, and compose written correspondence.
  • Communicate with crime victims, family members, and suspects regarding property and evidence matters.
  • Deliver, or arrange for delivery, evidence to crime laboratories for analysis as appropriate, as well as the return of such evidence to Department custody.
  • Perform audits and inventory on items of evidence/property stored within the Department-controlled facility.
  • Prepare inventory of property that is eligible under State Statute for disposal or auction and coordinate with administration for disposal of said property.
  • Properly utilize safe methods in handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Clean and disinfect storage facility.
  • Maintain adequate supplies of materials and equipment to facilitate all duties related to the Evidence Section.
  • Display extensive knowledge of and adhere to policies, rules, regulations, and related Federal, State, and local laws.
  • Train, assist, and advise personnel in proper evidence procedures, packaging requirements, laws, and case returns.
  • Act as liaison with other local law enforcement agencies, court personnel, attorneys, labs, and other officials.
  • May testify in court.
