About The Position

The Property Accountant is a new position within the accounting team, reporting directly to the Accounting Manager. Responsible for the full-cycle accounting and financial reporting of a diversified commercial and residential real estate portfolio, this role supports the financial operations of the properties through accurate reporting, account analysis, and performance monitoring. The Property Accountant works closely with operations and leadership to provide financial insight, support budgeting and forecasting activities, and help maintain efficient processes, strong internal controls, and high standards of financial accuracy across the portfolio.

Requirements

  • Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive property accounting experience within the real estate industry
  • Experience managing multi-entity or portfolio-based accounting
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, reconciliations, and general ledger management
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, and property recoveries
  • Proficiency with Yardi or similar ERP/property accounting systems
  • Experience completing HST filings and supporting audit and year-end processes
  • Advanced Excel skills and strong financial systems proficiency
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to provide meaningful financial insights
  • Knowledge of financial compliance, internal controls, and reporting best practices within the real estate industry
  • Applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application and during their employment at the M Group.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and analyze monthly financial statements for a portfolio of commercial and residential properties
  • Complete monthly account reconciliations and maintain accurate supporting documentation
  • Monitor financial performance, cash flow, and operating trends across the portfolio
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and expense management processes
  • Assist with year-end audit preparation, working papers, and audit requests
  • Prepare owner and investor reporting packages with a high level of accuracy and timeliness
  • Perform bank reconciliations, journal entries, and maintain general ledger accuracy
  • Complete HST filings and support other regulatory reporting requirements
  • Maintain organized financial records and contribute to continuous process improvements
  • Collaborate with internal teams and support overall business operations as required
