About The Position

The Projections Analyst supports the Labor Market Information (LMI) Team in developing employment projections by industry and occupation for Maryland and its local areas. The Projections Analyst produces data on Maryland's industries and occupations to support sector-focused workforce development strategies and provides technical assistance to teams developing important economic datasets on Maryland's economy, including the Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS), Current Employment Statistics (CES), Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW), and Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) datasets. The Projections Analyst serves as a backup for the CES and LAUS programs in the event of a staff shortage and works with the BLS Programs Administrator to develop data quality checks to ensure high levels of accuracy in employment data by industry and occupation.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • Four years of administrative staff or professional work.
  • Candidates may substitute 30 college credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year up to four years of the required experience.
  • Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university for the required experience.
  • Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master's degree from an accredited college or university for the required experience.
  • Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policy, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher ranking commissioned officer on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Economics, Statistics or related field.
  • One (1) year of experience collecting, cleaning, and analyzing economic data in a professional or academic environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft or other spreadsheet applications for data organization, analysis, and reporting.
  • Familiarity with economic datasets from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Responsibilities

  • Collect and clean historic employment data by industry and gather staffing pattern data.
  • Support projections economists in the development of economic models of workforce supply and demand.
  • Ensure revisions from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) are incorporated into MD Labor databases.
  • Leverage data expertise to support ongoing and ad hoc research requests, including workforce development strategies and monthly reports on Maryland's economy.
  • Develop custom industry clusters and work closely with other members of the LMI Team to respond to research requests.
  • Assist with data collection and analysis for the LAUS and CES programs and serve as backup in the event of staff shortages.
  • Assist with the calculation of annual Areas of Substantial Unemployment (ASUs) and support annual benchmarking and model review processes with the US Department of Labor staff.
  • Assist with data quality checks for BLS programs (QCEW, OEWS, CES, and LAUS), including identifying outliers and sudden shifts in reported employment wages.
  • Review BLS program data for accuracy prior to release to stakeholders and conduct analysis of key datasets as needed.
