About The Position

Austin Industries is a large, diversified construction company with over 8,000 employee-owners, offering civil, commercial, and industrial construction services through its operating companies: Austin Bridge & Road, Austin Commercial, and Austin Industrial. Austin Bridge & Road specializes in heavy highway and transportation projects, including asphalt and concrete services, complex highway interchanges, tollways, runways, bridges, rail projects, and water/wastewater facilities. The company is seeking an intern for its 2027 Summer Heavy Civil Safety Internship Program. This paid, 12-week full-time internship offers hands-on experience on multi-million-dollar heavy civil construction projects, working alongside seasoned professionals. The program has been recognized as a Top 100 Internship Program. Interns will report to an assigned project in the Dallas/Fort Worth/North Texas area and participate in social and volunteer events.

Requirements

  • Must be an active junior or senior college student working toward a bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Safety Management, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or similar.
  • Targeted graduation date between December 2027 and December 2028.
  • Must be able to work up to 40 hours per week; hours will vary depending on project schedule.
  • Must be able to commute onsite to assigned location.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must have the ability to think analytically, present ideas professionally, and work in project teams.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work for ANY employer in the United States.
  • Austin Bridge & Road is unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily jobsite walkthroughs to identify and report potential safety hazards.
  • Assist with safety inspections, audits, and reviews of active heavy civil construction projects.
  • Support incident and accident investigations, including collecting information and preparing reports.
  • Participate in weekly project safety meetings and assist with meeting documentation.
  • Help develop and deliver safety training, orientations, toolbox talks, and safety communications.
  • Monitor jobsite compliance with company safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist in identifying workplace hazards and recommending corrective actions and control measures.
  • Support the maintenance of safety records, training documentation, and regulatory reporting.
  • Collaborate with field personnel, supervisors, and project management to promote a strong safety culture.
  • Assist with pre-job planning activities to integrate safety into project execution.
  • Help distribute weekly safety communications and awareness materials to field teams.
  • Observe and evaluate the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe work practices.
  • Support environmental, industrial hygiene, and occupational health initiatives as assigned.
  • Research safety regulations, industry best practices, and emerging safety trends.
  • Provide administrative support for project safety programs and special initiatives.
  • Promote Austin's commitment to ensuring every employee returns home safely each day.
  • Other miscellaneous duties as defined by the Project Manager or Superintendent.
