About The Position

Austin Industries is a large, diversified construction company with over 8,000 employee-owners, offering civil, commercial, and industrial construction services through its operating companies: Austin Bridge & Road, Austin Commercial, and Austin Industrial. Austin Bridge & Road has over 100 years of experience in the heavy highway and transportation industry, providing asphalt and concrete services and constructing major projects like highway interchanges, tollways, runways, bridges, rail projects, and water/wastewater facilities. The company is seeking interns for its 2027 Summer Heavy Civil Engineering Internship Program. This paid, 12-week full-time internship program offers hands-on, real-world jobsite experience on multi-million-dollar heavy civil construction projects, guided by seasoned construction professionals. The program was recognized as one of the Top 100 Internship Programs by WayUp and Yello. Interns will report to projects in the Dallas/Fort Worth/North Texas area and participate in social and volunteer events, with opportunities to visit active project sites. The program aims to provide interns with practical experience in project planning, execution, quality, and safety, develop skills in reading construction documents, and foster collaboration with project teams. Interns will receive mentorship and explore career paths in project engineering, construction management, and operations leadership.

Requirements

  • Must be an active junior or senior college student working toward a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or similar
  • Targeted graduation date between December 2027 and December 2028
  • Must be able to work up to 40 hours per week; hours will vary depending on project schedule
  • Must be able to commute onsite to assigned location
  • Valid driver's license
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to think analytically, present ideas professionally, and work in project teams
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work for ANY employer in the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Processing submittals by reviewing, stamping, filing and distributing submittals
  • Sending RFI’s to architects and engineers
  • Resolving problems generated from the plans and specifications
  • Documentation– updating and distributing construction drawings, specification, shop drawings and samples
  • Participating in and aiding with weekly safety meetings as requested, including writing meeting minutes
  • Leading project orientation and maintenance of logs
  • Assisting with trade contractor coordination and scheduling
  • Assisting with maintaining project look ahead schedules
  • Verifying proper construction techniques per plans and specs (raise concerns and follow through until corrected)
  • Assisting with project planning and scheduling
  • Engaging in hands-on training with construction management software and tools
  • Participating in team meetings and client interactions
  • Supporting the documentation and reporting processes
  • Other miscellaneous duties as defined by the Project Manager or Superintendent

Benefits

  • Paid 12 weeks full-time internship program
  • Overtime will be paid for any hours in excess of 40 at a rate one and one-half times the employee-owner’s regular rate.
