Managing projects is a little like driving your company carpool group in rush hour traffic... on the Friday before Memorial Day weekend... while it is pouring down rain and your windshield wipers are streaking because something is stuck under the driver-side wiper blade. There are other drivers to watch out for (is that guy eating a sandwich while talking on the cell phone and steering with his elbows?) and traffic updates to monitor so you can try to avoid a major traffic jam. And all the while, people inside the car are talking way too loudly while they fiddle with the radio and change your AC settings. Like a driver trying to navigate in challenging situations you should have great situational awareness and laser-like focus while scanning the road ahead for potential hazards. You cannot always control what is going on inside the car or in the lanes around you, but you can anticipate problems and prepare to react when needed. Through sunny days or thunderstorms, you are always the cool hand at the wheel. The bottom line: You play a key role in our successful delivery of projects. You make sure everyone gets home safe and you are willing to take responsibility for the success of the journey. You understand your team and the short-term steps needed for long-term success. At times it is a thankless job, but your ability to communicate, work well with others, and keep track of a thousand small details is invaluable to the success of the team.
