About The Position

The Knowledge Enterprise (KE) Research Project Management Office (PMO) at ASU seeks an energetic, creative, and analytical individual to join us as a Project Manager, Research to help our faculty uncover the lessons of the past, navigate the perils of the present, and reinvent the promise of the future. ASU is evolving into a New American University that achieves excellence, access, and impact. To that end, KE, the home base for research at ASU, is charged with managing and growing a research portfolio that now exceeds $900M annually. This research encompasses fundamental and use-directed topics. Research PMO project management staff work closely and collaboratively with faculty, staff, and other stakeholders to plan, direct, organize, and execute fast-paced, complex research projects across a range of scales. In the university environment this requires: developing a working knowledge of cutting edge concepts and technologies; working with teams to develop proposals and other strategies to fund projects and programs (e.g., defining scope, outlining deliverables and milestones, developing costing models, and writing/editing support); understanding the importance of graduate and other training in the research enterprise; learning to navigate and anticipate the dynamic and ambitious ASU environment; and helping to manage resources efficiently and creatively by monitoring task and milestone delivery, tracking adherence to budgets, managing staffing requirements, and fulfilling reporting expectations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and five (5) years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
  • Responsible for collaborating with faculty and researchers in managing intermediate to complex aspects of proposal development, development of financial resources and programs, and ensuring compliance with university policies.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with scientific research activities and/or product development.
  • Evidence of Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
  • Evidence of effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with updating websites and/or social media.
  • Experience in writing and developing proposals for funding from federal and/or philanthropic sources.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, develops, implements, and manages a project team from concept through complete task definitions, work requirement identification, and assignments.
  • Works closely and collaboratively with key stakeholders to define project scope, strategy, budget, and outcomes; identifies critical resource expertise requirements and targets appropriate internal and/or external sources to ensure optimal outcome(s).
  • Establishes and continually monitors/manages project expectations with the team; assigns tasks and identifies issues for resolution to ensure optimal team effectiveness.
  • Prepares and maintains project status reports and schedules; tracks milestones/deliverables, critical paths, and dependencies; resets expectations as needed in consideration of project progress/outcomes.
  • Responds to inquiries regarding project status; prepares and responds to regulatory reporting/filings to ensure compliance.
  • Supports the Principal Investigator in management, coaching, and supervision of project team members, both internal and contracted, to ensure optimal outcomes.
  • Builds, develops, and maintains relationships vital to project success.
  • Works collaboratively with Principal Investigator(s) to engage leadership, associated scientists, and other research-related staff to define and identify all required project infrastructure, including, but not limited to , space, build/reconfiguration of laboratory facilities, equipment, technology, and instrumentation to ensure timely availability for successful launch and ongoing project operations.
  • Prepares post-project reports, budget allocations, and summaries/filings to ensure timely dissemination of information to all interested parties.
  • Manages one or more projects with limited subcontractors, investigators, and/or institutions.
  • Proactively identifies, develops , and deploys solutions to improve the effectiveness of project operations.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative working relationships with multiple stakeholders within the project scope.
  • Utilizes knowledge of project purpose and scope in decision making and risk assessment, understanding the impact on outcomes/success.
  • Prepares and maintains project budget and resource projections.
