About The Position

The Facilities Project Manager is responsible for managing or assisting in managing assigned projects in their specific category or type. This role supports the mission of the University of Chicago through efforts to maintain and enhance the University campus and environment and provide superior client service to our community including faculty, students, staff, neighbors, and visitors. The projects can fall into several categories: Technical, Research, and Laboratory Projects; Small Scale Projects; General and Large Scale Projects; Programming and Preliminary Design Projects; and Infrastructure Projects.

Requirements

  • Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.
  • Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the building process.
  • Familiarity with building processes and codes in the city of Chicago.
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills with all project stakeholders whether directly or indirectly involved.
  • Demonstrated negotiation skills and ability to understand construction documents, and evaluate appropriateness of estimate, bids, and cost proposals.
  • Excellent customer service skill.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills and ability to perform within deadlines.
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities.
  • Must be able to handle sensitive and confidential information.
  • Ability to handle ambiguity and exert informal authority.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree or related degree in construction management, engineering or architecture.
  • Experience in planning, design, construction and project management related duties and activities.
  • Higher Education or related institutional facilities.
  • Experience in project management, preferably in a hospital, research, or educational setting, or similar commercial or industrial facilities.
  • Experience on projects involving specialized processes, procedure rooms, and complex mechanical, electrical, plumbing, (MEP) and heating, ventilating, air conditioning (HVAC) support systems.
  • Demonstrated competency and exposure to building projects of different scales and involving all building trade divisions.
  • Familiarity in coordinating multiple interest groups and stakeholders.
  • Experience in working within complex phasing constraints and within existing densely built mature facilities environments.
  • Experience using project management (e-builder) software.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and coordinate all aspects of projects from inception through completion and transfer to Operations and Management by using the standard project management process.
  • Conduct fact finding to assure sound decisions are made relative to first cost versus life cycle costs.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with others in Facilities Services to meet the mission of Facilities Services and the objectives of project management.
  • Conduct regular communications with internal and external customers and stakeholders ensuring understanding of the project management process.
  • Oversee timely completion of the project including close-out procedures, archiving, customer move-in, etc.
  • Maintains Facilities Services philosophies by fostering a spirit of teamwork and cooperation.
  • Works with minimal guidance to manage project planning process, including facilitating and performing value engineering, soliciting or preparing construction cost estimates, and coordinating selection of vendors and contractors.
  • Assists in developing the master project schedule, defining the roles and responsibilities for the whole project team.
  • Guides the design and construction of spaces and buildings.
  • Establishes and reviews project documentation, prepares monthly progress reports, and negotiates additional services and contractors change order requests.
