About The Position

San Diego Unified School District is building and modernizing campus facilities for future generations. As Project Coordinator, you will lead projects from pre-planning and design through bidding, construction, and closeout. This role involves managing budgets, schedules, consultants, and contractors; negotiating change orders; enforcing contract compliance; and representing the district with various stakeholder groups, including architects, engineers, community organizations, and state agencies. This is a central accountability role for complex, bond-funded projects, requiring problem-solving and timeline management.

Requirements

  • Experience running full lifecycle projects from early planning through design, bidding, construction, and closeout
  • Experience as a single point of accountability for budgets, schedules, consultants, and contractors
  • Experience managing architects, engineers, and contractors simultaneously and keeping them aligned, productive, and accountable
  • Experience negotiating change orders and contract amendments, balancing contractor pressure with owner interests, and documenting thoroughly
  • Experience actively enforcing standards during design and construction, and ensuring systems function at commissioning and turnover
  • Experience running meetings, delivering updates, and handling questions from administrators, community stakeholders, and agencies
  • Experience diagnosing project drift and developing/executing recovery plans
  • Experience on publicly funded or highly scrutinized projects requiring compliance, transparency, and stakeholder alignment
  • Understanding of California public construction codes, bidding requirements, and operating within that framework
  • Experience leading projects with multiple stakeholders and managing political dynamics to keep projects moving
  • Degree in architecture, building engineering, or a related field
  • 8+ years of progressively responsible experience in architecture or engineering, with a construction emphasis
  • Deep knowledge of California public building codes and public bidding requirements
  • Proficiency in CADD, MS Word, Excel, and Project

Responsibilities

  • Full lifecycle management of school modernization and new construction projects within scope, schedule, and budget
  • Consultant and contractor coordination, including contract amendments and change order review
  • Design and construction quality control, commissioning, and project closeout
  • Regular status reporting and stakeholder meetings with administrators, community groups, and agency partners
  • Developing and executing recovery strategies when scope, schedule, or budget drift occurs
