About The Position

S&ME is seeking an experienced Project Engineer or Geologist to support its growing nuclear practice and contribute engineering or geology expertise and quality assurance experience to civil, environmental, geotechnical, and nuclear projects. Work may include site selection, due diligence, field exploration, construction quality assurance, permitting, licensing, and construction support for nuclear facilities, as well as projects in S&ME’s Commercial, Industrial, and Energy markets. The position may also serve as a Project Quality Assurance Manager (PQAM) or Quality Assurance Representative (QAR) within S&ME’s Nuclear Quality Assurance Program.

The role involves travel throughout S&ME’s footprint and hands-on work on complex projects alongside technical professionals. During nuclear project work, the schedule is rotational: 10 days on and 4 days off, with employees returning home between rotations. The role may be based near Knoxville, Charlotte, Raleigh, Columbia, Atlanta, Greenville-Spartanburg, or Columbus.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of relevant experience in geotechnical investigations, construction, and/or engineering projects.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to travel and work a rotational schedule of 10 days on and 4 days off during nuclear project duration, returning home between rotations.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and on uneven terrain.
• Ability to stand for extended periods, up to 12 or more hours.
• Ability to routinely lift and carry 40–50 pounds of equipment and samples.
• Must have valid employment eligibility (I-9).
• Must comply with the company’s Fleet Management, Substance Policy, and Reference Check requirements.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate field drilling operations to collect soil samples, monitor drill rig efforts, classify soils, and prepare boring logs.
• Analyze project data and make decisions to support project success.
• Prepare project proposals and reports that address client expectations and needs.
• Produce detailed reports presenting findings, insights, and recommendations for project development.
• Support projects and clients by communicating project updates and participating with leadership in business development events.
• Collaborate with field staff, engineers, and clients to follow the Nuclear Quality Assurance (NQA-1) program.
• Develop, implement, and maintain quality assurance program procedures and documentation in accordance with project and regulatory requirements.
• Lead and coordinate quality assurance efforts across multidisciplinary teams, contractors, and stakeholders.
• Conduct on-site audits, inspections, and assessments to verify compliance with project specifications, quality standards, and regulatory expectations.
• Lead or collaborate on off-site audits, inspections, and surveillance of subcontractors and vendors, including developing Commercial Grade Dedication plans.
• Communicate with clients, regulators, and internal leadership in environments subject to continuous oversight and review.
• Provide clear, accurate, and timely reporting on quality assurance performance, risks, and corrective actions.
