About The Position

S&ME is seeking an experienced Project Engineer or Geologist to support its growing nuclear practice. The role applies engineering or geology expertise and quality assurance experience to civil, environmental, geotechnical, and nuclear projects, with opportunities to contribute across Commercial, Industrial, and Energy markets. Project work may include site selection, due diligence, field exploration, construction quality assurance, permitting, licensing, and construction support for nuclear facilities. The employee may also serve as a Project Quality Assurance Manager (PQAM) or Quality Assurance Representative (QAR) under S&ME's Nuclear Quality Assurance Program. The position involves travel throughout S&ME's footprint and hands-on work on complex projects alongside other professionals. It may be based near Knoxville, Charlotte, Raleigh, Columbia, Atlanta, Greenville-Spartanburg, or Columbus. During nuclear project work, the schedule is rotational: 10 days on and 4 days off, with employees returning home between rotations. Work may take place outdoors in varying weather and on uneven terrain, and may involve standing for extended periods and routinely carrying equipment and samples. S&ME is a 100% employee-owned company. The role is full-time, with competitive pay based on experience. Candidates must meet the company's Fleet Management, Substance Policy, and Reference Check requirements and have valid employment eligibility; visa assistance is not available.

Requirements

At least 5 years of relevant experience in geotechnical investigations, construction, and/or engineering projects.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to travel and work a 10-days-on/4-days-off rotational schedule during nuclear project durations, returning home between rotations.
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and on uneven terrain.
Ability to stand for extended periods, up to 12 or more hours.
Ability to routinely lift and carry 40–50 pounds of equipment and samples.

Compliance with Fleet Management, Substance Policy, and Reference Check requirements.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

Coordinate field drilling operations to collect soil samples, monitor drill rig sampling efforts, classify soils, and prepare boring logs.
Analyze project data and make decisions focused on project success.
Prepare project proposals and reports to confirm client expectations and needs are met.
Create detailed reports presenting findings, insights, and recommendations for project development.
Support projects and clients through effective project-update communication and engagement with leadership in business development events.
As a PQAM or QAR, collaborate with field staff, engineers, and clients to follow the Nuclear Quality Assurance (NQA-1) program and support growth of the nuclear sector.
Develop, implement, and maintain quality assurance program procedures and documentation in accordance with project and regulatory requirements.
Lead and coordinate quality assurance efforts across multidisciplinary teams, contractors, and stakeholders.
Conduct on-site audits, inspections, and assessments to verify compliance with project specifications, quality standards, and regulatory expectations.
Lead or collaborate on off-site audits, inspections, and surveillance of subcontractors and vendors, including developing Commercial Grade Dedication plans.
Interface with clients, regulators, and internal leadership in environments subject to continuous oversight and review.
Report clearly, accurately, and promptly on quality assurance performance, risks, and corrective actions.
