About The Position

Marathon Petroleum Company is seeking a team-oriented Mechanical Project Engineer to join their Area Engineering team. This role will provide technical guidance for day-to-day technical support for a refinery operations team and project management services. Projects may include new small capital projects and modifications needed to properly maintain and optimize existing operating units. Additional assignments and responsibilities may be required based on knowledge, experience, and workload. The position will be based out of the Marathon Petroleum’s Mandan Refinery in Mandan, ND and reports to the Engineering Manager.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering is required.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ post degree engineering experience in the refining or petrochemical industry is preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Must be authorized to work in the US on a full-time indefinite basis without the need for employment visa sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel.
  • Must exhibit strong organizing, planning, critical thinking, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a dynamic refining environment.
  • Must be able to physically perform the essential job functions including, but not limited to, wearing all required PPE, working at elevated heights, confined space entry, fall protection, and respirator usage.

Responsibilities

  • Apply project management skills in all phases of project engineering: development, justification, design, construction, and start-up from conception to closeout.
  • Define scope, develop cost estimates and schedules, and secure funding approval from management for small capital and expense projects.
  • Support developing and submitting capital and expense budgets, forecast project spend monthly, and monitor costs associated with projects.
  • Prepare Decision Support Packages (DSP’s) and present to leadership.
  • Manage multiple projects/programs safely, efficiently, and within budget; develop strategies to meet schedules and mitigate delays.
  • Ensure compliance with Management of Change (MOC), Process Safety Information (PSI), and mechanical integrity documentation.
  • Coordinate project-specific work with in-house designers and outside engineering consultants to complete projects and studies cost-effectively.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders including Tech Services, Maintenance, Construction, and Turnaround teams to support planning and execution.
  • Interact daily with project team members developing and executing project objectives.
  • Develop and review construction packages to ensure new installations meet MPC and all applicable industry codes and standards.
  • Apply engineering codes and specifications, ensure designs meet safety, environmental and permitting standards.
  • Participate in incident investigations/root cause analyses assigned, completing process safety management (PSM) recommendations in a timely manner.
  • Provide specifications and support purchasing of engineered material for assigned projects.
  • Support field construction and final project installation sign-off.
  • Provide technical support, critical thinking, and troubleshooting skills for refinery process operations teams and on multi-discipline projects.
  • Participate in area HAZOP and LOPA reviews and incident investigations; apply safety and environmental standards to designs.
  • Promote safety awareness and take corrective action when unsafe practices or conditions are observed.
  • Provide engineering and design support for unit shutdowns and turnarounds.
