About The Position

GHD is seeking an experienced Project Engineer with a minimum of 5 years of experience and a strong background in construction and materials engineering. The role requires a motivated team player and leader to support geotechnical and construction material testing services at their Mississauga office. The successful candidate will function as a Project Engineer and Project Manager within the Materials Technology Business Group. This position operates within a hybrid work model, requiring three days a week in the office for collaboration and connection. The role involves project management, field investigations, engineering analysis, reporting, supervision, training, and scheduling of staff. It also includes acting as a liaison between clients, contractors, and GHD inspectors, preparing technical proposals and reports, managing construction/materials testing and inspections for various development projects, overseeing project schedules and budgets, preparing monthly invoices, supporting business development, and providing recommendations for non-compliant materials testing results. Experience with building science inspection services is a strong asset. The role also provides engineering support for geotechnical and construction materials aspects of projects, including foundations, engineered fills, reinforcing steel inspection, subgrade evaluation, soil movement management, field sampling and testing of materials, compaction testing, troubleshooting geotechnical issues, ensuring health and safety compliance, and conducting quality reviews and training.

Requirements

  • University graduate with a degree in geotechnical or civil engineering
  • Possess PEO registration in Ontario (P.Eng. license)
  • Minimum 5 years of experience with geotechnical, land development, and building science inspection and testing projects, at least 2-3 of those years of experience in Ontario, preferably in the GTA region
  • Ability to lead and cooperate with a team in various environments, as well as work independently
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical/technical, project management, and report writing skills
  • Desire to provide excellent practical client service and a commitment to technical excellence
  • Must be well organized and can manage and prioritize several assignments at one time, deliver on time and on budget
  • Knowledge of regional markets, agencies, and local terrain / geotechnical conditions
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s License (G)
  • Ability and willingness to be mobile and travel for work when and as needed

Nice To Haves

  • Having experience with the management of building science inspection services (such as roofing, waterproofing, thermal insulation, air vapor barriers, fire stop, smoke seal, and fireproofing, structural steel, etc) is a strong asset

Responsibilities

  • Project management, field investigations/assessment, engineering analysis and reporting, supervision, training, and scheduling of engineering and technical staff
  • Act as a liaison between clients, contractors, and GHD site inspectors to ensure that tasks are completed in a timely and cost-effective manner
  • Preparation of technical proposals and formal reports.
  • Manage, coordinate, and conduct a wide variety of construction/materials testing and inspections related, but not limited to, transportation, commercial, industrial, and residential building development projects
  • Manage project schedules, budgets, and prepare monthly invoices.
  • Support business development and client maintenance through client sourcing, preparation of proposals and strategies, and preparation of qualification packages. Manage and maintain excellent client relations.
  • Provide recommendations to clients and contractors for materials testing results that are not in compliance with specifications.
  • Provide engineering support for geotechnical and construction materials aspects of projects throughout the construction stages including: all types of foundations, small to large scale (shallow and deep), and ground improvements; placement of engineered fills and compaction testing; reinforcing steel inspection; subgrade evaluation by conducting proof roll inspections; management of excess soil movement and disposal in accordance with Ontario Regulation 406/19; field sampling and testing of aggregate, concrete, and asphalt materials; competent experience and understanding of nuclear densometer-based compaction testing; knowledge and experience with construction materials, including soils, aggregates, concrete, and asphalt; experience in troubleshooting geotechnical issues related to earthwork construction and providing effective solutions; ensure all project personnel understand and comply with the health and safety quality plan; manage and carry out quality reviews of materials, technology, field staff activities, and reports; carry out personal quality training
