About The Position

The Project Engineer IV leads strategic capital projects for U.S. Steel from concept through start-up, providing both project management leadership and hands-on technical expertise. Working in close partnership with operations, maintenance, engineering, and procurement. The role applies industry best practices — including front-end loading (FEL) techniques to deliver projects that meet safety, quality, schedule, and budget targets. The Project Engineer IV selects and directs the project execution team, which may include internal staff and external resources, and manages all supporting contracts with original equipment manufacturers, engineering firms, installation contractors, and EPCM firms.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience leading capital projects in a heavy industrial setting.
  • Demonstrated record of delivering large-scale engineering projects to strong safety, quality, schedule, and budget outcomes from concept through start-up.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to communicate capital project progress and KPI performance at all levels of an organization, including senior management.
  • Proficiency reading and interpreting engineering documents and drawings across all disciplines.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, Project Scheduling software, and Oracle.

Nice To Haves

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
  • Experience managing EP or EPCM contracts.
  • Experience executing projects with total CAPEX up to $100 million USD.

Responsibilities

  • Lead strategic capital projects concept to completion, including business case identification, initial planning, scope development, benefit definition, and cost estimating.
  • Evaluate and select the best available technology for each project, drawing on internal and external resources.
  • Prepare capital appropriation documents and budgets for committee approval.
  • Select, direct, and supervise the project execution team, including internal and external resources.
  • Direct outside engineering firms in preparing detailed equipment and installation specifications, design drawings, and inspection services as requested.
  • Review supplier proposals and recommend technically suitable equipment for purchase.
  • Review contractor installation proposals and recommend acceptable suppliers.
  • Monitor equipment manufacture and assembly for compliance with specifications and delivery schedules.
  • Manage equipment installation and modifications through commissioning.
  • Provide the training and start-up assistance needed to commission new equipment on schedule and achieve stated objectives.
  • Manage projects to budget and schedule, and communicate progress and KPI performance across the organization, including updates to senior management.
  • Execute U.S. Steel policies, with particular focus on safety and environmental compliance programs.
