PROJECT DEVELOPMENT UNIT CHIEF - (CIVIL ENGINEER VI)
About The Position
This position is accountable for assisting in the development of project studies in the districts to assure uniformity of policy compliance; approving exceptions to design policies; supporting approval of project studies, plans, and specifications; and ensuring projects are ready for letting in a timely manner. The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking to hire a Project Development Unit Chief. Requirements
- Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois OR current registration as a Licensed Structural Engineer in the state of Illinois.
- Six years of experience in civil engineering.
- Requires a valid driver’s license.
- Requires successful completion of a background screening.
- Requires occasional statewide and out-of-state travel with overnight stays.

- Three years of experience supervising staff and managing engineering functions.
- Ability to plan, develop, and implement strategies to achieve effective and efficient project development.
- Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to develop and deliver presentations.
- Ability to develop and maintain cooperative relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of highway engineering.
Responsibilities
- Assists district staffs to ensure project studies adequately resolve engineering and environmental aspects.
- Monitors and evaluates the preparation of project studies by the districts, assists with special problem solutions, and ensures uniformity of policy compliance.
- Assists district staffs as plans and specifications advance to letting on a continual basis to meet letting cycle deadlines.
- Ensures all exceptions to department design policies are properly justified and documented.
- Provides proper and effective utilization of staff through training, motivation, and evaluation.
- Performs all duties in compliance with departmental safety rules.
- Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
