About The Position

This position is accountable for assisting in the development of project studies in the districts to assure uniformity of policy compliance; approving exceptions to design policies; supporting approval of project studies, plans, and specifications; and ensuring projects are ready for letting in a timely manner. The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking to hire a Project Development Unit Chief. Requirements

  • Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois OR current registration as a Licensed Structural Engineer in the state of Illinois.
  • Six years of experience in civil engineering.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license.
  • Requires successful completion of a background screening.
  • Requires occasional statewide and out-of-state travel with overnight stays.

  • Three years of experience supervising staff and managing engineering functions.
  • Ability to plan, develop, and implement strategies to achieve effective and efficient project development.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to develop and deliver presentations.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of highway engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Assists district staffs to ensure project studies adequately resolve engineering and environmental aspects.
  • Monitors and evaluates the preparation of project studies by the districts, assists with special problem solutions, and ensures uniformity of policy compliance.
  • Assists district staffs as plans and specifications advance to letting on a continual basis to meet letting cycle deadlines.
  • Ensures all exceptions to department design policies are properly justified and documented.
  • Provides proper and effective utilization of staff through training, motivation, and evaluation.
  • Performs all duties in compliance with departmental safety rules.
  • Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
