About The Position

This role involves participating in the Deaf Strong Hospital educational activity, which simulates a healthcare environment for first-year medical students at UR SMD. The activity requires the involvement of at least 30 deaf actors who are community members to play the roles of healthcare professionals, while medical students act as patients. This initiative aims to sensitize medical students to the nuances of working with patients who primarily use American Sign Language (ASL) and/or English as a second language. Actors will be assigned roles such as doctors, psychiatrists, pharmacists, and receptionists. Prior to the activity, actors will receive brief training on role-playing etiquette and rehearse a prepared script. Additionally, actors will assist with setting up and cleaning up the event space, including tables, chairs, signage, materials, and portable privacy curtains.

Requirements

  • Must be Deaf.
  • Must be fluent in American Sign Language (ASL).

Responsibilities

  • Play the role of a healthcare professional (doctor, psychiatrist, pharmacist, or receptionist) in the Deaf Strong Hospital educational activity.
  • Participate in a brief training session to understand role-playing dos and don'ts.
  • Rehearse a prepared script prior to the activity with medical students.
  • Assist with setting up and cleaning up tables, chairs, signage, materials, and assembling/disassembling portable privacy curtains.
  • Be available to work on Friday, August 21, 2026, for the Deaf Strong Hospital activity.

Benefits

  • Compensation Range: $17.00 - $22.10 per hour
