The Project Accountant is responsible for managing financial aspects of assigned projects, ensuring accuracy in cost tracking, budgeting, billing, and reporting. This role acts as a liaison between the finance and project management teams, ensuring compliance with financial policies and the timely completion of accounting tasks related to projects. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, highly organized, and skilled in project-based financial management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 2–4 years of experience in accounting or project accounting, preferably in a project-driven environment (e.g., construction, engineering, consulting)
  • Proficient in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Deltek, Sage, Viewpoint, or other ERP systems)
  • Strong Excel skills and familiarity with project management tools
  • Understanding of GAAP and cost accounting principles
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and report on financial performance of individual projects from initiation to closeout.
  • Prepare and maintain project budgets, forecasts, and cost reports.
  • Review and process project-related invoices, purchase orders, and subcontractor pay applications.
  • Track labor hours, materials, and overhead costs against budgets.
  • Ensure timely and accurate billing to clients in accordance with contract terms.
  • Collaborate with project managers to analyze cost variances and forecast future expenses.
  • Support month-end and year-end close processes related to project accounting.
  • Reconcile project-related general ledger accounts.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting policies, contracts, and applicable regulations.
  • Assist with audits, client reporting, and documentation requests.
