About The Position

The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) is seeking a highly motivated and energetic Programmer I. This role is part of a creative team responsible for all aspects of ongoing software development, from initial specification through testing, launching, maintenance, and customization. The Programmer I will develop complex, multi-faceted applications used by a large percentage of MMSD staff, working collaboratively with a project team including other developers, lead staff, and users. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential. The position requires a working knowledge of PHP, .NET, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, MS SQL Server, and AJAX. Requirements

  • Knowledge of object-oriented programming principles and software architecture standards.
  • Understanding of modern front-end technologies, including JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS3, to support responsive web interfaces.
  • Proficiency in back-end development, specifically designing, implementing, and testing efficient, reusable features and modules using PHP, .NET, and SQL.
  • Understanding of fundamental application design principles required to build scalable, high-performance systems.
  • Ability to analyze, debug, and document complex software code while optimizing performance, reliability, and scalability.
  • Skill in developing and maintaining seamless software integrations across internal and external software systems and databases.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, test, and maintain core software products and databases to ensure optimal functionality and system integrity.
  • Skill in diagnosing and solving complex architectural challenges and performance bottlenecks throughout all phases of the software development lifecycle.
  • Ability to design, develop, and test software applications as a core component of new product development and future system planning.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within cross-functional teams to deliver on project requests, resolve issues, and create technical documentation.
  • Skill in collaborating with department staff to define business rules, establish project requirements, and develop technical training for end-users.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the demonstrated ability to maintain detailed project documentation, manage problem investigations, and interact professionally with stakeholders.
  • Exceptional attention to detail in writing code, conducting technical analyses, and reviewing project deliverables.
  • Ability to provide technical leadership and guide business decisions by evaluating performance, reliability, scalability, and security considerations.
  • Ability to monitor, manage, and communicate project status, progress, key issues, and technical risks effectively to users and management.

  • Associate Degree in Software Programming or related field, or commensurate work experience demonstrating required skills.
  • Experience with SQL relational database architecture and maintenance (Microsoft SQL Server preferred), and experience setting up MS SQL Server Databases.
  • Experience with version control software Subversion and with web application framework e.g., CakePHP framework.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and construct custom applications using PHP, JavaScript, .NET, and other modern programming languages to directly support assigned department operations.
  • Design, build, and deploy sophisticated, scalable web applications from initial concept to release.
  • Develop and maintain seamless integrations between internal and external software systems and databases to ensure data consistency across district platforms.
  • Engineer clean, maintainable, and well-designed code, delivering complete software solutions and technical documentation on schedule in accordance with department standards.
  • Evaluate and implement open-source solutions and configuration strategies to fulfill functional requirements efficiently while maintaining long-term maintainability.
  • Translate high-level functional specifications and business requirements into clear technical specifications and system design plans.
  • Assess technical feasibility of proposed feature requests and generate accurate effort estimates, project timelines, and development schedules.
  • Perform thorough code reviews for internal team members and third-party vendors to uphold coding standards and alignment with project guidelines.
  • Evaluate and enhance departmental best practices, engineering workflows, and system architectures by proposing continuous quality improvements.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with team members and key stakeholders to align project outputs with organizational goals and technical leadership direction.
  • Communicate technical concepts effectively and maintain professional relationships across written and verbal interactions with district staff, vendors, and partners.
  • Design and deliver professional development training programs to enable district staff to effectively utilize and navigate custom-developed applications.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by executive leadership or their representatives or designees.
  • Attend district and school functions that support MMSD’s strategic framework, initiatives, and core values.
  • Complete any and all district required training.
  • Build collaborative relationships with business partners.
