CALS- Programmer Analyst III- Earth and Atmospheric Sciences
About The Position
The Programmer Analyst III will be supervised by Dr. DeGaetano, with guidance also provided by federal scientists and researchers at other collaborating universities. The programmer analyst will work as part of a team fulfilling the Base and Regional Service Tasks specified in the federal contract supporting the NRCC. The scope of this work provides products and services to address regional climate information needs. This includes leveraging NOAA’s capabilities and expertise by transforming its satellite, in situ, radar, and paleoclimate data and products into regionally-tailored products and services, as appropriate, that meet the needs of users and partners and promote resilience and prosperity. To achieve this the programmer analyst will provide coding support to: 1) identify user needs to respond to climate-related decisions, 2) Develop, test, and sustain tools, products, and services meeting user requirements, 3) Transition appropriate tools, products, and services to operational states, and 4) Sustain ongoing NRCC activities. The position is funded by a long-term NOAA supported contract as well as grants from private industry, New York (and other) States, and other federal agencies, all based at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. There will be support for conferences and travel to collaborate in person with project partners. The successful candidate would join an active community of professional staff, postdoctoral associates and graduate students and at Cornell. This is a full-time position at 100% FTE. This is a one-year term appointment that is contingent upon available work, funding, and performance.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in atmospheric science, climatology, computer science, information science, data science, or a related quantitative field.
- Proficiency in Python.
- Proficiency in web-development.
- Experience with working within situ and gridded climatological datasets.
- Familiarity with federal and regional climate data sources.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability and desire to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
Nice To Haves
- M.S. or Ph.D. in atmospheric science or related field.
- Experience with artificial intelligence as applied to code and web development.
- Experience with machine learning methods and software.
- Ability and desire to create clear and compelling visualizations.
- Ability to convey complex results and methodologies to a lay audience.
