About The Position

The Ministry of Indigenous Relations serves as a central point for the Government of Alberta to foster and maintain respectful relationships with Indigenous Peoples, communities, and organizations. The ministry fulfills Alberta’s legal duty to consult and works in coordination with other ministries, the federal government, and First Nations on land-related claims and collaborative initiatives. The Program Officer provides comprehensive program, relationship management, grants administration, and operational support across the Metis Relations Unit. The position supports the development and maintenance of relationships with Indigenous communities and organizations, contributes to the implementation and administration of grant and contribution programs, and assists with the delivery of the Employment Partnerships Program (EPP). The role conducts research, prepares briefing materials, maintains information management and data tracking systems, tracks program results, supports proposal review processes, and coordinates a variety of operational and administrative activities. The position works across multiple program areas and provides flexible support in response to emerging priorities, ensuring the unit can effectively achieve its strategic, operational, and relationship-building objectives.

Requirements

  • University degree in a related field (such as Public Administration, Indigenous studies, social sciences and political sciences).
  • No experience required; or equivalent as described below.
  • Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
  • Experience supporting program delivery, grants administration, or stakeholder engagement activities.
  • Experience preparing briefing notes, correspondence, reports, and presentations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with Indigenous organizations or communities.
  • Understanding of Indigenous, specifically Métis, communities, organizations, and issues in Alberta.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams, and SharePoint.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain contact databases, stakeholder profiles, community information, and relationship tracking tools.
  • Assist in maintaining effective working relationships with Indigenous organizations and community partners.
  • Assist in preparing materials for meetings with Indigenous governments, organizations, and external stakeholders.
  • Monitor media, stakeholder activities, and emerging issues relevant to Indigenous Relations programs.
  • Draft briefing notes, issue notes, correspondence, speaking notes, presentations, and background materials.
  • Support intake, review, processing, and tracking of funding applications and supporting documentation.
  • Maintain funding records and ensure documentation complies with ministry requirements.
  • Assist in reviewing grant agreements, amendments, work plans, budgets, and reporting submissions.
  • Support communication with grant recipients regarding program requirements and deliverables.
  • Assist in preparing program summaries, reports, and briefing materials.
  • Supports the maintenance of electronic and physical records in accordance with ministry records management requirements.
  • Support data entry, tracking, quality assurance, and reporting functions.
  • Support branch initiatives and special projects as assigned.
