The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine seek a Program Officer or Senior Program Officer to develop and manage programs and projects in the mathematical sciences. The position is within the Center for Advancing Science and Technology (CAST), in the Physical Sciences, Systems, and Infrastructure (PSSI) program area. PSSI sets research priorities, highlights future directions, and develops policy innovations across the mathematical and physical sciences, energy systems, engineering and manufacturing, infrastructure and facilities, and defense and intelligence. It brings together experts from academia, government, and industry to provide independent advice through consensus studies, workshops, roundtables, and other activities. The role develops and manages programs, studies, workshops, meetings, and related activities; establishes objectives, work plans, schedules, budgets, and deliverables; engages experts and sponsors; conducts research and prepares written products; plans and facilitates convenings; supports communications and dissemination; guides project staff; and contributes to program development and sponsor relationships. The position may be filled at either the Program Officer or Senior Program Officer level. Both levels perform core program and project work, with the Senior Program Officer role carrying substantially greater independence, complexity, leadership responsibilities, sponsor accountability, and responsibility for program development. The Program Officer manages assigned work, typically with guidance from senior staff, while independently handling day-to-day execution. The Senior Program Officer independently designs and manages multiple or highly complex projects, establishes strategy and budgets, leads staff and sponsor relationships, and takes substantive responsibility for developing and securing future work. The Program Officer requires a master’s degree in mathematics, statistics, engineering, a related mathematical sciences field, or equivalent knowledge, and three years of related experience. The Senior Program Officer requires a master’s degree in a related field or equivalent knowledge, six years of related professional experience including two years in a supervisory capacity, and demonstrated impact on science or policy through National Academies activities or equivalent work. A Ph.D. in mathematics, statistics, engineering, or a related mathematical sciences field is preferred. The work environment is hybrid office/telecommute, with an expected onsite percentage of 60% and occasional travel between National Academies facilities and to off-site meeting and sponsor locations. Compensation is $92,040–$115,040 for Program Officer and $105,230–$164,420 for Senior Program Officer. The position is benefits-eligible. A cover letter is required.
