About The Position

The Hart Leadership Program (HLP) at Duke University prepares and inspires undergraduate students to practice the art of leadership in public life through internships, fellowships, and co-curricular leadership projects. The program's mission is to teach Duke undergraduates how to practice ethical leadership by fostering community-based action, research with a civic mission, and collaborative practices that build genuinely public goods. The Program Coordinator is a key member of the HLP team, reporting to the Director and working closely with staff and faculty. This role is responsible for coordinating experiential education programs, combining program coordination, student advising, community engagement, research support, and co-curricular design. The position requires a passion for these areas and a desire to contribute to the future of the Hart Leadership Program.

Requirements

  • One year of experience in program administration or involving academic, instructional, or counseling activities to acquire skills necessary to plan, coordinate, and implement a variety of program activities and events, OR an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience
  • Experience in a student-facing role, preferably in advising or program coordination
  • Experience working with nonprofits, NGOs, public agencies, or community-based organizations
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and project management and implementation skills
  • Superior oral and written communication skills, including confidence in public speaking and writing for a public audience with minimal editing to the highest standards of professionalism
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work effectively with faculty, students, staff, alumni, and internal and external constituents
  • Highly motivated with the ability to work under pressure against multiple deadlines and manage multiple simultaneous projects efficiently and effectively
  • Eagerness to find solutions, collaborate with a team, and share both work and credit
  • Abiding interest in the work of the Hart Leadership Program and ability to describe the mission, scope, and values of the program
  • Proficiency in software programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Canva, Access, PowerPoint, Google Suite, and WordPress

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement all aspects of the fellowship experience in partnership with faculty
  • Coordinate recruitment, application, and selection processes for the Hart Fellowship and LAPI & PEP Programs
  • Plan and lead orientation, retreats, and monthly seminars for the Hart Fellowship
  • Advise and mentor fellows on research, project development, and placements
  • Manage logistics including stipends, travel, visas, and housing for the Hart Fellowship
  • Track assignments and represent the Hart Fellowship program to partners
  • Collaborate with colleagues on program design and development for LAPI & PEP Programs
  • Advise students on research design, project development, and logistics for LAPI & PEP Programs
  • Oversee operational logistics such as travel, stipends, and documentation for LAPI & PEP Programs
  • Track student outcomes and lead reflection activities for LAPI & PEP Programs
  • Maintain program manuals and ensure accurate recordkeeping
  • Ensure consistent administration of policies
  • Lead annual program reviews and improvements
  • Support donor stewardship and events
  • Build relationships across campus and community partners
