About The Position

This role focuses on planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating year-round service-learning programming for middle school and high school youth. The position involves designing experiences that integrate community service with reflection, skill development, and youth leadership, aligning with positive youth development principles. Key responsibilities include managing program calendars, supervising staff and volunteers, handling administrative and fiscal tasks, and fostering community partnerships.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school in Education, Recreation, Social Work, Human Services, Youth Development, Psychology, Sociology, or a closely related field
  • Two to three years of progressively responsible related experience in youth programming, youth development, service learning, recreation, or a closely related field, including experience supervising staff, volunteers, or youth participants
  • Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Valid Ohio driver's license with less than 8 points.
  • CPR/First Aid certification, or ability to obtain within six months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, develops, implements, and evaluates year-round service-learning programming for middle school and high school youth, including school year volunteer opportunities, after school programs, extracurricular programming, safety education programs, and summer service camp sessions.
  • Designs service-learning experiences that integrate meaningful community service with structured reflection, skill development, and youth leadership aligned with positive youth development principles.
  • Plans and prepares service projects for middle school volunteers in after-school programs, including sourcing supplies, creating prototypes, writing step-by-step instructions, and preparing materials.
  • Develops and maintains the annual program calendar including school-year activities, summer camp sessions, community events, fundraisers, and special projects.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibility in accordance with policies, procedures and applicable laws including interviewing, hiring, and training staff; planning, assigning and directing work; establishing deadlines; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Consults with the H2O Program Manager on personnel matters, program priorities, and issues requiring departmental coordination.
  • Provides leadership and oversight to a team of young adult summer camp counselors and program staff; recruits, screens, trains, and supervises staff and provides ongoing mentorship and professional development to develop their skills in youth engagement, behavior management, and service-learning facilitation.
  • Supports volunteer training, onboarding, and supervision.
  • Recruits and engages youth participants across Lakewood public and private middle schools and high schools; builds a culture of volunteerism, leadership, and community responsibility among participants.
  • Assists in developing grant proposals and maintaining all related files; collects and verifies information for grant reporting; coordinates fiscal activities with The Lakewood Foundation as the program's fiscal sponsor.
  • Prepares complex, routine and non-routine reports as requested utilizing a variety of software; maintains program participation records, volunteer hour tracking, and statistical data for department leadership, grant compliance, and community reporting.
  • Assists in developing and monitoring program budgets; tracks expenditures and revenues; coordinates fundraising activities and donor stewardship in partnership with The Lakewood Foundation.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
