About The Position

The City of Johnson City, Tennessee is accepting online applications for a Program Coordinator I with Parks & Recreation to work in the Athletics division. The employee performs intermediate skilled work assisting with all aspects of programming and special events in parks and recreation. Responsibilities including scheduling of staff, events and performing beginning level recreation work in the active instruction and supervision of recreation activities; does related work as required. The Program Coordinator I reports to the Center Supervisor. The work in this class involves assisting in organizing recreation activities and performing in a supervisory role of limited responsibility in a recreation center, or in supervising and instructing children or adults in games, sports, arts and crafts and other organized recreation activities. Employees in this class normally work under close supervision, but their work is subject to frequent inspection and review by superiors through observation, staff meetings and program evaluation reviews.

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of program scheduling and public relations.
  • Some knowledge of the use of materials and equipment required of a variety of recreation activities.
  • Basic knowledge of the rules and procedures of the sport or activity to which assigned.
  • Basic knowledge of common juvenile and adult group games and sports.
  • Thorough knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of public recreation programming, activities and group activities in a structured siting.
  • Ability to adhere to program standards and objectives outlines by supervisor, and to lead and instruct groups in games, sports and other recreation activities.
  • Ability to resolve disputes in an impartial manner.
  • Ability to interact tactfully with the public, as well as to create an interest in and appreciation for various opportunities and outlets for recreation programming.
  • High school graduation or GED.
  • Pre-employment physical, drug screening and background check required.

Responsibilities

  • Research, develop, plan, implement and evaluate various programs and activities scheduled to meet the needs of the residents of the community.
  • Maintain a wide variety of programs and events and offer new programs on a regular basis.
  • Coordinate various after school programs, summer park activities, sporting events and clinics.
  • Obtain feedback from participants.
  • Keep customers, maintenance and office personnel updated on the status of programs and events for assistance as needed.
  • Address relevant questions, comments, and concerns of users in a timely manner.
  • Work within the program budget.
  • Assist with summer playground programs and sports camps.
  • Receive and process citizens calls.
  • Schedule officials and referees for athletic events.
  • Recruit volunteer coaches.
  • Monitor athletic events.
  • Assist in instructing and supervising groups engaged in activities: organized games, storytelling, dramatics, group singing and other varied recreation activities.
  • Supervise and direct play in baseball, softball, horseshoes, volleyball, table games and other small games.
  • Request minor repairs to equipment.
  • Supervise practice games, conduct tournaments, umpire and instruct children in tennis, baseball, basketball and softball.
  • Assist in scheduling league games, and resolve disputes.
  • Supervise and assist in preparations for various special events.
  • Instruct children and youths in study activities, and in various crafts.
  • Supervise free play to prevent accidents and maintain order.
  • Observe necessary precautions to ensure the safety of program participants and spectators.
  • Render routine first aid in cases of minor injury.
  • Chaperon groups at dances and recreation centers.
  • Perform related tasks as required.
