About The Position

The McGill Office of Religious and Spiritual Life (MORSL) provides multi‐faith resources and programming for the religious and spiritual well‐being of all McGill students. They offer support to students across the religious, spiritual, and secular spectrum and encourage students’ spiritual exploration through workshops, events, publications, and a lounge and meditation space. The outreach assistant builds bridges between MORSL and students at special events and in the office. They represent MORSL at student-facing McGill events (especially during orientation). They work to help students connect with MORSL and faith clubs and groups/activities, and also serve students visiting MORSL’s drop-in space. They engage with students in interactive activities and gather information to enhance MORSL’s resources. The student filling this 6-week position as program assistant for outreach will serve as a student representative of MORSL at in-house and campus-wide events, focusing on connecting with students. They assist students in learning about accessing services they need. They assist in preparing content, materials and various communications to raise awareness of MORSL’s services and engage in topics of relevance to students’ needs in the area of religious and spiritual life. They provide logistical assistance with the coordination of activities and events including setting up and taking down MORSL booths at service fairs. They participate in delivering interactive activities with the support of MORSL regular staff. They gather information about religious and spiritual life on campus as well as on relevant topics in order to act as a resource person and to enhance MORSL’s growing inventory of resources, programs and curriculum. In the office, they support MORSL’s day-to-day operations.

Requirements

  • Have a friendly, open, approachable personality and is comfortable initiating conversations with people they have not met before.
  • Enthusiastic about connecting with people and learning about them.
  • Enthusiastic about spirituality and/or faith and about supporting others in their spiritual and religious lives.
  • Comfortable talking about faith backgrounds, practices, groups, and needs.
  • Understand different faith identities/groups and their specific needs, practices, etc.
  • Someone capable of serving as a resource to students regarding spiritual/faith needs.
  • Respectful, pluralistic, open-minded and curious approach toward a wide variety of religious identities, traditions, and worldviews.
  • High School Diploma
  • 2 Years Related Experience
  • Level 3 (written, advanced) and level 4 (spoken, fluent) English proficiency.

Nice To Haves

  • Strength in graphic design for prepping promotional materials is an asset.
  • Strong organization and communication skills.
  • Good at record keeping, keeping track of events, and getting in touch regularly with volunteers.
  • Ability to converse in French is an asset

Responsibilities

  • Staffs kiosks and tables around campus to raise awareness of MORSL and selected topics.
  • Engages with students regarding questions about religious and spiritual life, resources, etc. on campus.
  • Does outreach work with student clubs and strengthens their connections with MORSL.
  • Helps plan and staff multi-faith activities with MORSL.
  • Assists with day-to-day office operations.
