About The Position

Cary Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources is seeking an energetic and creative recreation professional to assist with the development and facilitation of Action Sports and Urban Adventure programming. This position supports the Outdoor Recreation Program Supervisor with the implementation and growth of programs focused on action sports and urban outdoor recreation activities. Primary responsibilities include facilitating programs, assisting with the development of new program offerings, preparing equipment and program materials, and supporting the overall delivery of Action Sports and Urban Adventure programming. Programs may include traditional action sports such as BMX, skateboarding, and scooters, as well as emerging and non-traditional recreation activities such as disc golf, geocaching, and other urban adventure programs. This position will support and instruct programs across multiple Outdoor Recreation sites and program areas, including Cary Action Sports Park, Town parks, greenways, and other program locations. This is a part-time, non-benefited, year-round position, up to 20 hours a week, with a maximum of 999 hours per year. Evening and weekend availability is required depending on program schedules.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of Action Sports and Urban Adventure programs including BMX, skateboarding, scooters, disc golf, geocaching, and other emerging recreation activities
  • Ability to lead recreational activities and engage participants of various ages, ensuring safe and positive recreation experiences.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills; maintaining deadlines, accurate records and program documentation across multiple programmatic areas.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communications with staff, participants, and the public
  • Basic proficiency with computers and common office software
  • Requires a combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or GED AND a minimum of 1 year of experience instructing Action Sports (BMX, skateboarding, or scooters) programs, camps, or youth activities.
  • Requires a CPR/First Aid certification or the ability to obtain certification with provided training.
  • Requires possession of a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal history check, SBI fingerprinting, motor vehicle records check, education verification and credit history review) and satisfactory reference checks prior to employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Some experience with disc golf, geocaching, or outdoor adventure programming
  • Some experience with the development or planning of Action Sports programs
  • Some experience with program registration systems or scheduling software

Responsibilities

  • Assume a leadership role, working alongside peers and under the guidance of supervisors, to further the mission of Outdoor Recreation and the Town of Cary.
  • Develop and lead Action Sports and Urban Adventure programs including BMX, skateboarding, scooters, disc golf, geocaching, and other emerging recreation activities, ensuring safe and positive recreation experiences.
  • Prepare, organize, and manage equipment, supplies, and materials needed for programs, and coordinate supply purchases as approved.
  • Maintains program documentation by assisting with participant records and programmatic reports.
  • Responds to public inquiries regarding programs and assists with registration, scheduling, and program information.
  • Supports the coordination of camps, programs, and special events.
