About The Position

This opportunity is with our Good Shepherd – Family Centre. The Program Assistant will provide receptionist duties for the program, answering phones and doors, greeting and directing service-users and visitors as the first point of contact. They will also provide basic clerical support such as basic data entry, record keeping and filing, maintaining program inventory and supplies, sending emails, submission and follow up of maintenance requests and work orders. The role also involves maintaining cleanliness of units, storage areas and common spaces, and assisting with all aspects of program operation. Work takes place primarily in the emergency shelter, however, opportunities may include visits in the community to purchase program supplies, drop off items, or pick up donations. The successful candidate must be willing and able to assist with all aspects of program operation in a hands-on capacity, work independently, cooperatively and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team, and preserve the dignity of all people by communicating in a calm, welcoming, and professional manner. Time management skills are necessary in a high energy, changing environment. The role is responsible for participating in Good Shepherd's Health and Safety programs and procedures, and working in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations to minimize risk.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary education in Social Services or a related field is required
  • Minimum 1-year related experience in community outreach or emergency shelter, and/or equivalent combination of education, training and experience in Social Services or a related field
  • Have knowledge of and have experience working with a range of issues impacting families including homelessness, violence against women and children, immigration, poverty, mental illness and substance use
  • Commitment to and experience working within a person-centered, trauma-informed, harm reduction and housing first framework
  • Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills, verbal and written communication, time management and organization, and ability to prioritize workload
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team
  • CPR certification or willingness to be certified is required
  • A valid G license is required

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a residential setting is preferred
  • Experience with HIFIS & EMHware is an asset
  • Fluency in a 2nd language is an asset
