About The Position
Under direction, provides staff support in an assigned school program by assisting teachers and students with paraprofessional work. This position is assigned to the Juvenile Detention Center. Program support may include monitoring student behavior, maintaining records and reports, providing instruction and assistance, communicating with parents and staff, and enforcing codes of conduct. The incumbent works with students individually and in groups as directed by the assigned supervisor. Essential functions vary according to the assigned functional program. Related work may be assigned.
Requirements
- Associate’s degree or higher, or at least 60 semester hours from an accredited institution of higher education; official transcripts are required to validate education.
- At least three years of progressively knowledgeable and responsible experience applicable to the assigned functional program.
- Demonstrated administrative support skills.
- Ability to effectively communicate program goals and objectives.
- Must be highly qualified before employment begins with Orange County Public Schools.
- Passing a third-party paraprofessional certification exam, such as the ParaPro Assessment, may substitute for the educational requirement.
Responsibilities
- Respond to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous, and empathetic manner, representing OCPS positively.
- Provide assistance and support in the assigned functional program.
- Perform routine to moderately complex administrative support duties, such as maintaining attendance and student records, printing and distributing reports, scoring examinations, filing materials, and answering telephone inquiries.
- Monitor student activities and behavior to support students’ physical and environmental safety and ensure adherence to conduct and disciplinary controls.
- Assist teachers or supervisors with developing and implementing program curriculum and activities.
- Maintain and properly store program equipment, supplies, and materials.
- Explain, demonstrate, and provide instruction to students; reinforce skills according to individual student needs or supervisor direction.
- Conduct recruitment activities as applicable to the program, including engaging potential employers, parents, community agencies, resources, and students.
- Assess exceptional student skills and employability to identify job-placement potential, and assist with job-placement coordination and transition when applicable.
- Assist teachers or supervisors in checking and objectively evaluating student performance or progress; teach and reinforce skills individually and in groups according to instructional guidelines.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with district administrators, school staff, students, parents, community agencies, and employers, as applicable.
- Keep current with job-related technology and attend district-supported training as needed to maintain required technology skills.
- Maintain timely and accurate information as part of job responsibilities.
- Perform related duties as directed.
