About The Position

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Louisville School of Medicine seeks a full-time, doctoral-level Academic Clinical Chemist to provide clinical, scientific, and academic leadership for clinical chemistry and related laboratory medicine services. The successful candidate will join a collaborative faculty group committed to high-quality patient care, trainee education, diagnostic innovation, and scholarship. Academic rank will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, and academic accomplishments.

The successful candidate will provide scientific oversight for clinical chemistry and related laboratory services across a highly matrixed academic health system that includes 9 hospitals, 4 medical centers, a cancer center, eye institute, more than 250 physician practice locations. The laboratory network is anchored by a highly automated, state-of-the-art core laboratory at University Hospital, and a broad network of satellite laboratories across the health system. The role requires close collaboration with pathologists, laboratory leaders, clinicians, and health-system administrators to advance quality, innovation, test utilization, and patient care across multiple practice settings.

Primary responsibilities will include clinical consultation; scientific oversight of clinical chemistry and related laboratory services; quality management and regulatory compliance; test utilization and laboratory stewardship; assay validation, implementation, and troubleshooting; and development of new or expanded diagnostic services. Depending on expertise and departmental needs, areas of responsibility may include automated chemistry, immunoassays, toxicology, therapeutic drug monitoring, point-of-care testing, mass spectrometry, special chemistry, and other laboratory medicine services.

The department values a strong commitment to education, mentorship, and collaborative academic engagement. Educational responsibilities will include teaching medical students, pathology residents, fellows, clinical laboratory science trainees, and other healthcare professionals in both didactic and clinical settings.

Applicants with active extramural funding, a strong record of grant activity, or clear potential to develop an independently funded research program will be prioritized. Areas of scholarly focus may include translational diagnostics, assay development and validation, mass spectrometry, toxicology, laboratory stewardship, informatics, quality improvement, artificial intelligence, or other areas that strengthen patient care and health-system laboratory practice.

Prior experience in an academic medical center and a record of scholarly activity, including peer-reviewed publications, educational scholarship, translational research, or quality improvement initiatives, are highly desirable.

Requirements

• PhD, or equivalent doctoral degree in Clinical Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Toxicology, Chemical Biology, or a closely related field.
• Board certification or board eligibility by the American Board of Clinical Chemistry (ABCC) or equivalent recognized credential.
• Demonstrated expertise in clinical chemistry and laboratory medicine.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, leadership, and collaborative skills.
• Commitment to excellence in patient care, education, and scholarly activity.

Nice To Haves

• Experience in an academic medical center, health system, or reference laboratory.
• Experience with assay development, method validation, quality management systems, and laboratory accreditation processes.
