About The Position

The Professional Winter Patroller is responsible for the basic risk management and emergency response on the mountain including; providing on-hill emergency medical services, transporting patients, performing basic snow safety and avalanche mitigation, maintaining signage, providing exceptional guest services, executing chairlift evacuations, compiling incident investigations, and more. It is a varied and rewarding position that helps people to challenge and enjoy themselves in our great outdoors. We are the first on the mountain in the morning and the last off at night, and we take great satisfaction in sharing our passion for winter and the outdoors with others.

Requirements

Be passionate about Bogus Basin’s Mission to engage with the community to provide accessible, affordable, and fun year-round mountain recreation and education.
Be certified as an Outdoor Emergency Care Technician by the National Ski Patrol, or have an EMT-B (or higher), before the start of the Winter season in November.
Have a valid and current BLS-CPR for Healthcare Professionals or above.
Have a valid and current driver’s license.
Be able to clear a background check.
Be able to ski or snowboard safely and with confidence, maintaining control in all conditions, on all runs, and in off-piste areas.
Be able to ski or snowboard while carrying rescue gear to injured guests and then assist in their extraction and rescue.
Be able to occasionally lift up to 100 pounds and occasionally lift 50 pounds overhead.
Have the ability to effectively inform our patrons, offering guidance and advice regarding the use and enjoyment of the area.
Present a professional and positive image of the company when interacting in the community and on the job.
Have the ability to perform essential duties efficiently and accurately, with or without reasonable accommodations and without injury or hindrance to yourself or others.
Attend pre-season trainings and refreshers in October and November.
Be available to work mid-November through April, possibly into May, if conditions allow.

Nice To Haves

Be proficient with Microsoft Office, Google suite of tools, and mapping software.
Have previous experience Patrolling.
Have other certifications, such as OET, ORM, Instructor, or Instructor Trainer from the National Ski Patrol.
Successfully completed an American Avalanche Association Professional Level I or higher.
Have previous experience working at a ski area.
Be familiar with technical rope rescue techniques.

Responsibilities

Respond, assess, and render first aid for injuries and medical emergencies sustained by guests, employees, volunteers, and patrons of the Bogus Basin Recreation Area.
Carry out daily work assignments to an acceptable standard with a minimum of supervision.
Complete opening and closing procedures for assigned areas on the mountain.
Continue throughout the day to monitor your assigned runs to assess and mitigate any problem areas.
Sweep assigned runs at the end of the shift to check that no one is left behind on the mountain.
Perform inspections, inventories, and maintenance of rescue equipment, all first aid caches, splints, stretchers, special emergency equipment, and evacuation gear.
Transport injured guests off the mountain using a toboggan.
Assist in the improvement of general trail conditions and safety by removing or marking hazardous conditions from the trails.
Be able to ski or snowboard on all terrain, and in all conditions, often while carrying equipment, signs, and supplies to various locations on the mountain.
Assist lift operators by observing that the lifts and carpets are functioning properly, and providing emergency lift evacuation in the event of an emergency or a malfunction.
Participate in continuing education and skill development.
Be able to perform lift evacuation using ground or aerial evacuation equipment.
Assist with avalanche mitigation work.
Know helicopter safety protocols and the locations of appropriate landing zones.
Maintain good public relations by assisting skiers and riders who need it.
Take an active part in the safety awareness programs, and be proactive about our risk management programs and the Responsibility Code
Maintain a professional and collaborative team engagement with all volunteers, staff, supervisors, and other departments.
Provide thorough and accurate patient care reporting in a timely manner.
Assist trained staff in incident investigations as required.
Possibly serve as the Dispatcher by maintaining daily records, dispatching resources to respond to incidents, and coordinating communications within the patrol, with other Bogus Basin departments, and with outside agencies.
Provide patient care while occasionally working in the Patrol Aid Room.
Use radios to communicate with other patrollers and mountain staff to coordinate work projects, activities, and rescues to ensure a high level of teamwork and efficiency.
Communicate via phone, radio, and in person with other EMS, Fire, Law, and SAR agencies to provide unified and appropriate responses to various situations.
Coordinate and secure landing zones with other Bogus Basin personnel and air ambulance services.
Participate in a yearly performance review and goal-setting session with a Patrol Coordinator, Supervisor, or Manager.
Assist in the preparation and execution of special events.
Perform other duties, as required.
