The RN manages and provides patient care during surgery in both the circulating role and the scrub roles. Circulating nurses are RNs who work with the surgical staff to help aid in surgery preparations, intra-op charting, operating room setup, and other intra-op duties. Scrub nurses are RN’s who work with surgeons, residents, and surgical staff to help with sterile operations. Nurses “scrub” into surgery (sterile) and handle the sterile instruments and supplies. OR nurses are also responsible for maintaining accurate and detailed patient records and communicating with other members of the healthcare team. They may function in the OR Charge RN role on evenings, nights and weekends.
